Seizing the advantage, she rammed into the man with her knife, this time driving it into the side of his hip. It sliced into him with ease.

She would have to wear him down over time. Little cuts, bit by bit.

He grinned mischievously, eyeing her like a predator. A weaker foe might have been scared, but Luna was prepared for this.

This man wasn’t even her true target. He was just a decoy. On the wind, Luna smelled who she was after somewhere nearby.

The rogue wolf took cover, hiding partially behind a tree.

“I can still see you, you idiot,” Luna said.

“Oh, I don’t mean to hide,” the man said. His voice was half human and half monster as she watched the clothing rip from his form, the moon running streaks over his gray fur.

Shit.

If he shifted before she did, he was going to have the advantage. There was little she could do against the speed of a transformed shifter.

Taking the initiative, she fell to her hands and knees, feeling the moon’s glow overtake her. Her teeth grew, and her face changed shape. And all too quickly, her thoughts became consumed with a familiar hunger.

Her clothing ripped off her. That would be a problem for future Luna.

Nearly as soon as she completed her shift, she felt the rogue wolf’s fangs in her ribs, and she leapt back.

In human form, she was far smaller but more agile. Would she have the same advantage in wolf form?

She didn’t have time to strategize as the wolf was already approaching her.

He was much faster as a wolf, probably faster than she was. She could only use her wits now.

But could she strategize fast enough when he was wearing her down?

Then she saw the gushing knife wounds she had created in him. He wasn’t healing properly. Luna struggled to think of what could be causing it. Perhaps it was his advanced age, but whatever it was, she was happy to take the help.

This time, as she charged forward and sidled to the left, she ripped into him with her fangs. He squealed out in pain.

Luna wasn’t going to let go. She dug in with all her strength, intending to feel his life force leave him.

He tried to claw at her, even scraping her eye, but Luna adjusted her lower half, staying attached to him by the jaw.

She pulled her chin to the left and right, thrashing him as though the man were a chew toy. He tried to claw her again but failed. He tried to ram her into a tree, but she just leapt from him. In his weakened state, she could easily reattach to him. This time, she grabbed his throat.

She wasn’t going to stop until he was dead.

She could never forgive him for what he and his kind did.

In her mind, Luna heard a groveling voice.

“Please,”it said.“Let me go. It was only a paycheck.”

“And I loved him,”Luna replied mentally.

She took a bigger bite, and she felt his resistance weakening until it stopped.

He was finally dead.

It was a pity he couldn’t give her what she truly wanted. If he had cooperated, she might have spared his life.

She bit down one final time, feeling her teeth hit bone, and then spat blood onto the ground. She paced on all fours.
