“Not long after the girl’s father died,” Herald repeated.

Adrian thought he saw realization crossing Sergei’s eyes. The dripping of the water in the tunnels came to the forefront as the three stood together in silence.

“How good of a friend are you with Victor, exactly?” Sergei asked. “Because I’m suddenly starting to question something.”

“He’s invaluable to our council but not above suspicion,” Adrian replied, smirking sideways at Herald.

He had thought Herald had the worst timing and was going to get them captured or killed, but in his quiet reflection, he’d secretly found the perfect opportunity to interject.

Sergei looked from Adrian to Herald and then back again. “And have you been in contact with the fugitive, Luna Wane?”

“No,” Adrian and Herald said at once.

Sergei turned his back to them, walking away.

“I will be in contact,” he said. “And if you do happen to run into Luna, I would love to have a talk with her.”

The two of them nodded before realizing that Sergei couldn’t see them.

“I do not think I will be introducing you to the pack today,” he said. “Perhaps another time. I assume you remember the path. You can see yourselves out.”

Without another word of protest, the two turned, walking back through the tunnels. The tunnels were difficult to navigate, and they eventually found themselves lost, but when they were far enough away, they struck conversation.

“Don’t ever do that again,” Adrian said to his beta. “For the good of my health. Please.”

“What, save your ass?”

Adrian shook his head. “That was highly risky. You could have gotten us both killed.”

“Oh, come on,” Herald said. “You were too busy sucking up to the alpha to prove Luna’s innocence.”

“I was being diplomatic.”

They hit another fork and debated over which way to turn. Adrian swore he saw Sergei turn right here.

“Okay. Best case scenario in your plan, right,” Herald said. “We make good with them, then head back home.”

“Go on.”

“They reach out to their best bud, Victor, and find out Luna is staying in our pack.”

Adrian kept walking, not sure whether he was going the right way.

“I see your point,” Adrian said.

“Now, if your girl’s telling the truth, they look back into the deaths of Luna’s father and Darius, and they find out things don’t add up.”

Adrian thought of how much pain Luna must have gone through these past several months, being charged with murder, driven from her home, and losing who she thought was the love of her life.

He committed himself, then and there, to exonerate her. He carefully ignored the deep pain in his heart it caused to think of Luna with another.

She was beginning to mean the world to him, and he wanted to mean just as much to her. The thought that she was mourning a lost love was a bitter pill to swallow. But clearing her name and giving her peace was the right thing to do, even if it did make something twist and clench inside of him.

“Can you tell me anything about where my son is?”
