“Aren’t you going to answer it?” Sasha asked.

Luna hissed, shaking her head. “It’s Sergei!”

“Who?”

Without thinking further, Luna answered the phone on impulse. She had to be ready for every scenario if they were going through with this. Even if it meant being extradited back home or facing a vengeful ex-pack member.

“Hello?”

“Luna, girl, please don’t hang up,” Sergei said. “I’m not calling for your head, although a few days ago, I might have been. Things are moving fast,” Sergei said. “Where are you?”

“If I told you that, I’d be in a world of trouble,” Luna replied. “Speaking of which, how did you even get this number? I don’t recall adding you to my family and friends plan.”

“Your beta gave it to me. Upstanding chap, that Gerald man.”

Luna nearly corrected him and then decided not to bother.

“What are you calling about, Sergei?” Luna asked. “I really don’t have a lot of time, and I’m kind of all out of patience after you tried to have me charged with murder.”

Sergei laughed nervously in response. “Oh, you heard about that? That’s embarrassing.”

“You sent armed guards after me!”

That’s when the officiant stepped into the room, carrying an old brown briefcase. He looked around the room, not understanding its emptiness, before stepping down to the altar.

Luna started cursing under her breath.

“Are we still having the ceremony?” the officiant asked far too loudly. He was old and very deaf.

At that, Sergei nearly shouted over the phone.

“Ceremony? You’re having a mating ceremony?”

Luna put her hand over the receiver before remembering that phones no longer worked like that.

“We’re still figuring some things out,” Luna said to the man. “Just give us thirty minutes. We’ll let you know.”

“Okay …” the elder reluctantly replied. “But I’m charging you extra for this.”

And the elder sat himself down on a chair, setting his briefcase gently beside him and placing his hands in his lap.

“Whose idea was it to have a mating ceremony right now?” Sergei demanded over the line, being just as intense as she remembered.

“Whatever, Sergei,” Luna replied. “Look, if you’ve come to take me in or execute me, I guess you know where to find me now.”

Sergei sighed in exasperation. “I don’t have time for this,” he said. She had to strain to hear him, as right then, a crowd of children filed into the room with their parents, the enforcers entering the decrepit but charming room. “Your dear friend Victor is moving fast. You need to get out of there.”

Luna laughed. “I appreciate your concern, Sergei,” she replied, feeling a sudden bout of panic as she watched the room fill suddenly. It was starting a bit late, but at least her audience was arriving.

“But I know Victor put you up to the charges. And I know what he told you about me. So if this is some trick, it’s not a very good one.”

She remembered everything Herald and Adrian had told her about their attempts to convince Silver Fang of her innocence, but it somehow rang hollow. For him to be calling her now of all times was very suspect with Victor having been silent all this time.

She didn’t trust him.

Luna missed Adrian. She wished he’d hurry up and get here, hoping that if Victor was planning something, they could flush him out. Looking around, she realized that Sasha was no longer eavesdropping on her conversation. She suddenly wasn’t sure where Sasha was at all. With the audience now much larger than just the officiant, she felt very alone.

“Thank you for drastically misjudging me, but we know what Victor did,” Sergei replied. “We’ve looked into it. Maybe someday, I’ll be able to give you a proper apology, but that day isn’t today. You need to run.”
