He nods, a twinkle in his eyes. "Consider it done. Dylan's got a knack for bringing interesting company. Let's see if I can match his taste in drinks."

Dylan leans in, introducing us with an air of camaraderie. "Cameron here is not just a bartender. He's a maestro of mixology. You're in for a treat."

"Flattery will get you everywhere, Dylan."

The drink, whatever it is, tastes delicious, and whenever Cameron gets a spare moment, he teases Dylan. Dylan clearly wasn’t lying about being friends with the bartender, and I can’t help but hope that Dylan hasn’t lied at all.

Not that I can add one of the mayor’s bodyguards to my list of allies, right?

I drank too much and Uber a ride home. I don’t like leaving my car, but there’s no help for it. Dylan paid for the Uber after offering to drive me, but he realized before I declined that I might not want him to know where I live. He’s thoughtful, and I appreciate that more than I can say.

I’m also tired, and I didn’t want to risk becoming loose-lipped.

Or loose-hipped.

When I arrive home, though, I find a quiet moment to reflect on the events at the Nocturne Nexus. Despite the fatigue, a lingering curiosity prompts me to delve into the online realm, searching for information about Dylan. As I navigate through digital threads, my suspicions dissolve, replaced by a reassurance that Dylan has indeed been truthful.

Satisfied with my findings, a subtle smile plays on my lips as I recall leaving my number on a napkin for Dylan.

CHAPTER 11

The morning sun casts its glow through my window, waking me. Once I have my coffee, I call my brother.

"Dominic, I need you to do a background check on someone for me. His name is Dylan. He's a bodyguard for the mayor."

"Sure thing, Vanessa. Anything specific you're looking for?"

"Just the basics for now. I want to make sure everything checks out. You know how it is in our world."

“I’ll get back to you soon.”

“Thank you.”

I go about making myself breakfast. I’ve just sat down to eat my eggs and toast when the soft chime of my phone disrupts the quiet morning, drawing my attention. As I pick it up, a sense of intrigue accompanies the unknown number. Dylan maybe?

“Hello?”

"Hey, Vanessa,” Dylan says, his warm voice filling my ears. “I was wondering if you'd be interested in joining me for dinner tonight. There's this place I know that serves incredible food. What do you say?"

His invitation carries a blend of genuine enthusiasm and anticipation. After the surprising encounter at the NocturneNexus, the prospect of further exploration, this time in the light of day, holds an allure.

"Dinner sounds great, Dylan. I'd love to join you. What time and where?"

“Velvet Enigma. I can pick you up if that’s all right.”

“I’ll meet you there.” I suppress a groan. I need to have my brother help me fetch my car.

“Of course. I… I had trouble sleeping last night. I thought about calling you, but…”

“Trouble sleeping?”

“I was worried about you getting home safely.”

“Ever the bodyguard,” I tease. “I got home safe and sound.”

“I’m glad. Does seven work for you?”

“I’ll see you then.”
