“Why not just move here? Start over fresh?”

“I am starting over fresh,” I protest.

“Starting a mafia is one hell of a way to start over fresh.”

“If I’m the one in charge…”

“I don’t mind at all when you take charge.” He eyes me. “Who did you tell to come here?”

He hadn’t asked that on the ride here, and I hadn’t volunteered that information.

The flickering firelight plays across Jesse’s handsome features.

“Alex Schroeder and Xavier Davis.”

Jesse tilts his head to the side. “I don’t know Alex?—”

“Both of them are crucial to my plans,” I say in a rush.

“Xavier?” he snaps.

“Alex is a kind, caring soul?—”

“It sounds like he’ll be eaten alive.”

My eyes have to flash warningly. “He’s smart?—”

“Easy to control, I bet.” He snorts. “Was he the one you were out on that date with? He didn’t score, did he?”

“You crass ass. No, if anything, Alex can be a bit controlling at times, but his heart's in the right place. And Alex believes in me.” I lift my chin.

Jesse shakes his head. “Xavier is a cold one.”

“At times, yes, but?—”

“What? Deep down, he has a heart of gold? I don’t believe it.”

“He knows how to get shit done.”

Jesse narrows his eyes. “I never liked him.”

“I know you didn’t.”

“The way he…”

I place my hand on his chest. His heart is racing.

“Do you trust me?” I ask.

“Yes. It’s Xavier I don’t.”

“Would I want him on board if I couldn’t handle him?”

“Just how do you handle the likes of him?”

I don’t answer and just pat his chest until I can feel his heartbeat start to slow.

It’s another twenty minutes before the others arrive. I open the door and welcome them inside.
