“It won’t backfire. There’s not even a guarantee that he’ll be onboard.”

“I’ll tell you what I’ll be onboard with,” Xavier murmurs in my ear.

We kiss a few times, and things get hot and heavy before I pat his rump and leave him in the alcove.

Time to talk to Dylan.

I send Dylan a text.Hey, Dylan. Do you think you can swing by City Slice when you get the chance? There’s something important we need to discuss.

I can in about three hours.

Sounds good.

During those three hours, I not only continue to ensure that everything is in order but also go over in my mind what I want to say to Dylan. I don’t want to let on that the casino will be illegally run. He knows about the one that’s being built, but this one will be a surprise to him.

When it’s almost time for him to come, I head to the pizza joint and wait there.

“This place opens soon, huh? You’re a regular businesswoman,” he says.

“You have no idea.” I take him by the hand and take him to the back door that leads us to the casino.

“What is this place?” he asks.

“I’m expanding.”

“You have all this… the casino you’re building… and the pizza place?” He looks around in wonder before turning toward me. “Just who are you?”

“Vanessa Baxter,” I say with a grin. “Please, take a seat. We've got something important to talk about.”

Dylan walks over to one of the tables, touches it, and then sits down.

I sit beside him. “Considering your skills and connections… I don’t know if you’ll even have the time for this… even if only one night a week…”

“What are you asking?”

“I would feel better if we have an additional bouncer in our rotation,” I explain.

“Ah.” He blinks a few times. “I appreciate the offer, Vanessa. What's the catch?"

I smile broadly. "No catch, just an opportunity. I need someone I can trust.”

“And having an insider at City Hall can be advantageous,” he says.

“I won’t deny that,” I admit. “It's a role that comes with risks, but I believe you can handle it."

“Risks?”

I maintain an air of innocence. “You said as much with your previous job.”

He slowly nods. “The mayor has several bodyguards, not just me. I have two nights off a week now. I suppose I might be willing to take on at least one night a week… if I can see you for pleasure the other night.”

“Are you trying to date your future boss?” I ask.

“I do want to know how this will affect our relationship,” he says.

I hesitate. “That’s a good point.”

“We haven’t discussed being exclusive yet.”
