Suddenly, he cries out, his seed spurting out in long, thick streams, landing on my tongue and the roof of my mouth. The taste is salty and earthy, a mixture of him and me, a taste that I'll never forget. I swallow all of it, letting it fill me, sealing the connection between us.

As his orgasm subsides, he collapses on top of me, our bodies intertwined, sweaty and slick with desire. We lay there for a moment, catching our breath.

And then he turns to me, kisses me deeply, and then buries himself between my thighs.

"I'm not done with you yet," he growls before he shoves his tongue inside me.

Fuck, I hope he's never done with me.

CHAPTER 26

The rhythmic hum of activity in The Black Lotus comes to an abrupt halt as Jesse's normally composed demeanor shatters. I notice Jesse's fists clenching involuntarily, his eyes narrowing at the familiar face of the detective. The air thickens with tension as he abruptly rises from his seat, a storm brewing beneath the calm exterior he usually presents to the world.

"Vanessa," Jesse murmurs through gritted teeth, his controlled facade slipping away, revealing a glimpse of the man haunted by the shadows of his past. "We need to leave. Now."

I follow his gaze to the man standing at the entrance casting a discerning gaze across the room.

Detective Raymond Foster.

Jesse’s urgency sends a ripple through the atmosphere, catching the attention of the others. He yanks on my arm, but I hold up a hand.

“Nessa, don’t you remember?” Jesse hisses, turning his back to the detective.

“I remember,” I say calmly.

Detective Foster was the one who investigated the murder Jesse committed for the Shadow Syndicate. He was the one who caused Jesse to leave, albeit at my insistence.

Unfinished business from our past.

I position Jesse so he’s in the corner and much harder to see. "Jesse, we'll handle this together. We can't let the sins of our past dictate our future. Tell me what you need."

His gaze meets mine, a storm of conflicting emotions brewing. "I need to deal with this detective, Vanessa. It's a part of my past I can't outrun, but I won't let it harm you or our plans."

In that moment, I realize that the web of our intertwined lives has brought us to the precipice of a challenge, and facing it head-on is the only way forward. As Jesse steels himself for the confrontation, the shadows cast by his past begin to merge with the tangled threads of our present.

But I don’t want to risk his life for this. We’re building a new future, and the stain of the Shadow Syndicate won’t ruin my rise.

Our rise.

“Jesse, just wait here a moment,” I say. “Let me go and check?—”

“Dylan’s the bouncer tonight, isn’t he?”

I don’t like Jesse’s tone.

“He is, isn’t he?” Jesse continues. “He’s betrayed us and you know it.”

I don’t want to believe it. His accusation against Dylan hangs in the air like a heavy storm cloud, casting shadows over the trust we've carefully woven.

Jesse’s eyes blaze with a mixture of frustration and concern. "Vanessa, we can't afford to let Dylan play games with us. If he's compromised, we're all at risk," Jesse asserts, his voice edged with urgency. “I’ll kill him. I’ll kill them both.”

I take a deep breath, steadying myself in the face of this unexpected storm. "Jesse, I need you to trust me on this. There has to be more at play than meets the eye. I want to see how this unfolds before making any rash decisions."

Jesse's jaw tightens, his gaze searching mine for reassurance. "Vanessa, I've been down this road before. I won't let anyone hurt you. Let me handle this."

I place a hand on his arm, a gesture meant to convey both understanding and determination. "Jesse, I trust Dylan. There's more to our connections than what's on the surface. We can't let paranoia unravel everything we've worked for. Please, trust me on this."

His gaze lingers, a silent struggle playing out in his eyes. Eventually, Jesse nods, a reluctant acceptance settling in. "All right, Vanessa, but if anything goes wrong, you let me handle it my way. I won't stand by if our safety is compromised."
