Page 56 of My Empire

I join the others in the van, and the driver takes off. I shift to look out the window. The flickering flames dance in the night as Anderson’s laboratory becomes engulfed in a blaze of retribution. The crackling of the inferno echoes the satisfaction of a strategic strike against the heart of his criminal empire.

Watching the flames, I murmur, “Let it all burn. He won’t rebuild from this.”

I glance at the others. Maybe it’s my mind playing tricks on me, but I swear there’s an orange glow over their faces. The destruction we’ve wrought is a proud reminder of the consequences that await those who dare to cross Vanessa Baxter.

Alex’s grim. “He won’t forget this anytime soon.”

We round the corner, retreating into the shadows as the fire rages, leaving behind the remnants of Anderson’s illicit activities. The night air is thick with the scent of burning secrets, and the city skyline watches silently as we carve our mark on the canvas of the criminal underworld.

The aftermath of our actions is both chaotic and poetic. The destruction of Anderson’s lab sends a clear message to anyone who might harbor intentions of challenging my dominance, a warning etched in flames against the canvas of the night.

Xavier jerks a thumb over his shoulder. “That should make him think twice before crossing us again.”

Dylan nods. “I’d say we made our point.”

As we fade back into the shadows, the crackling embers continue their dance, casting shadows that seem to whisper tales of our vengeance. In the world we navigate, where power is both elusive and treacherous, the flames of retribution illuminate the path forward, a beacon in the darkness of our relentless pursuit.

Now, would be the time to consider finally killing Anderson, but Marlena Voss chooses now of all times to make a move against me. The faint scent of victory lingers in the air as we retreat from the smoldering ruins of Anderson’s lab. The taste of success, however, is short-lived as an unforeseen storm gathers on the horizon. Marlena Voss, a formidable adversary, makes her move, exploiting the chinks in the armor of the Penumbra Legion.

I stare at my phone in horror. “Marlena, making her move now? Dammit, we can’t catch a break.”

Xavier furrows his brow. “What does she want?”

Dylan rubs his face. “Probably to exploit the chaos after Anderson’s hit.”

“We only just hit him!” Alex cries.

“Every criminal needs to know what’s going on at every second in order to stay ahead,” I murmur. “She’s doing what she should. That doesn’t mean I like it.”

“You sound like you respect her,” Jesse accuses.

“She’s against us. We knew this, and now…”

As the leader, I take a moment to gather my thoughts. Marlena Voss is cunning, and her timing suggests a keenunderstanding of our vulnerabilities. The Penumbra Legion, my carefully crafted alliance, now faces a threat that could unravel everything.

“Now what?” Alex presses. “What did she do?”

“She hasn’t done anything… yet,” I say. “She expects payment for protection.”

“Extortion,” Jesse growls. “She’s playing dirty, trying to bleed us dry.”

I tuck my phone away. “It’s a power play. She thinks she can force us into submission.”

Alex rubs his temples. “We can’t let her think she’s won.”

Marlena Voss demanding payment for protection adds a layer of complexity to the already tense situation. It’s a classic move in the criminal underworld, a subtle assertion of dominance, cloaked in the guise of security. The demand not only threatens the financial stability of the Penumbra Legion but challenges the very notion of control within the criminal empire. The protection she offers is mostly false. If we decline to pay, her own goons will be the ones we need protection from.

Hers and Damian’s. Anderson’s if he tries to recover from this, not that I understand why he would bother at this point.

Dylan taps his upper thigh. “We have to decide—pay up or fight back.”

Xavier leans forward. “If we pay, we’re admitting weakness. We can’t let her think she has the upper hand.”

I nod. “We won’t be extorted, but we also can’t underestimate her.”

As the tension simmers within the van, the decision looms large. Each choice carries consequences, and Marlena’s moves seem calculated to exploit any perceived weakness. The city’s shadows deepen, and the Penumbra Legion must navigate the treacherous waters ahead, mindful of the delicate balance between power and vulnerability.

We’re silent for the rest of the ride to The Black Lotus. The driver drops us off and then goes to help the others. I planned for us to nab the drugs. They’re being brought to Dominic’s house for now until I decide what to do with them.
