I blushed. "I…um, thanks."

Chase cleared his throat. "I'm sorry. That got really awkward. I just mean, you cared about him. It's hard to find genuine people these days." He was obviously thinking about Brandi.

I didn't know her, but she didn't seem like the settling down type to me. Maybe I was wrong, but Chase didn't deserve to be caught in the middle any more than I did.

"It really is," I agreed. It would be a long, long time before I'd trust anyone again. If I ever did. Maybe my busy lifestyle just wasn't conducive to having a relationship. If I couldn't be around for someone, how could I expect them to be around for me?

Hell, I couldn't even keep a goldfish alive. Poor Captain Bubbles. He was probably better off in fishy heaven, or wherever the toilet led to.

"I appreciate you telling me," Chase said. "Anyone else might have just kept quiet and let me find out when I walked in on her with someone else." He seemed very sure she would do it again.

"You deserved to know," I said. "Before things got more serious."

He nodded and opened his mouth to say something. He froze, mouth open, eyes on the door.

I looked that way and narrowed my eyes.

Brandi looked back at me with a mixture of recognition and horror.

CHAPTER 4

CHASE

"I should go."

I barely registered that Ashley spoke, but I nodded.

"Right, yeah."

She stood and hurried past me. I caught a whiff of her perfume. Something floral and soft. A pleasant contrast to the strong fragrance Brandi preferred. I ignored the way my dick twitched in response. Now was not the time to think withthathead. Or about another woman, while Brandi was right in front of me. I wasn't that kind of guy. I thought Brandi wasn't that sort of girl.

I got to my feet, stood my ground while Brandi sashayed toward me.

We met right here, I realised, with a start. Brandi sat on my lap and fed me chips. We'd shared a few beers, then she dragged me out the door and into an alleyway a street or two down.

I tried hard not to think about what we did to each other there. If I did, I might forget how mad I was at her.

"Hi, lover," she purred. She put a hand on my arm and looked me right in the eyes.

I pulled my arm away. "Is it true?" I asked.

"Is what true?" Her eyes shifted uncomfortably. I knew she knew exactly what I was referring to. I think she hoped she was wrong, that Ashley and I were just having a friendly chat.

"That you slept with Kris." I wasn't in the mood to pull any punches. If Kris was here, I mightthrowa few. Not at Brandi though. Now matter how angry I was, I'd never hit a woman.

"Isthatwhat she told you?" Brandi gave a tinkly little laugh. "You shouldn't believe everything you hear."

"That wasn't a no," I pointed out.

Brandi shoved me back into my seat and straddled my lap. Her breasts were almost in my face.

"Why do you always want to waste time talking, when we could be having fun instead?" She kept her voice low and husky.

I forced my eyes up, to look her square in the eyes. "Why are you changing the subject? Yes or no, did you sleep with him?"

Brandi pouted. "I get lonely when you're away. If you let me come with you?—"

My shoulders sagged. I tilted my head back, moving my face as far away from hers as I could get.
