Chapter 25

Ican tell by looking at Kate how hard she has to concentrate. The effort is written all over her face. But sure enough, she manages to send odeon to Gray. Water droplets form on his body, continuing to accumulate until he ejects them outward in a lightning-fast motion. They form a small wave that surges across the floor of the gym.

Kate looks at the teachers, who are standing nearby with their arms folded, watching the whole process.

“Not a bad start,” says Mr. Laydon.

“Yes, something finally seems to be happening,” Ms. Rupert agrees.

“And you said that Gray’s element used to be earth?” Mr. Laydon asks again.

Kate nods. “Yes, I actually thought he was an earth spirit.”

Mr. Laydon rubs his chin thoughtfully. “As you’re probably aware, sometimes after a person dies, the same key spirit passes to someone close to them. This usually happens within families. We know of a few cases where the spirit’s element has changed. But it’s a rare phenomenon, which we don’t know much about. However, we suspect that it has something to do with thedifferent odeon of the key carrier. Apparently, everyone’s odeon is different.”

“Keep working on it,” says Ms. Rupert. “This is a big achievement. But you still have a long way to go.”

I frown and sigh quietly. Somehow these two teachers always manage to diminish every accomplishment. Kate should feel proud and allow herself to enjoy this moment.

“Keep practicing and we’ll check in with you later,” says Mr. Laydon. He and Ms. Rupert move on to observe some other students.

“You did great,” I say, putting my arm around Kate’s shoulders.

“It’s a really weird feeling. Suddenly there’s this burning inside me, this tingling feeling trying to get out. And as soon as I let it out, I’m able to help Gray direct his magic effectively. Sure, we still need to practice, and we have a lot to learn. But... isn’t this just incredible?!”

I nod, and I’m really happy for her.

“I’m still sad about Ty’s keyring. But I realized I don’t need it anymore. I have so many memories of him, and so does Gray. Together we can keep Ty’s memory alive.”

She looks at me, and I see how sincere she is. She’ll never forget him.

“I want to go to his grave sometime in the next few days. Now that I’m a Tempes, I’m allowed to go there. I was kind of nervous about it before. But I think I can handle it now. Gray will come with me, and we’ll bury the pieces of the keyring there and say goodbye.”

“That’s a great idea,” I say. “If you want company, I’m happy to come with you.”

“Thanks,” says Kate, “but this is something I need to do alone.”

“I totally get it. You guys will be fine.”

She nods. “Okay, let’s train some more. Do you have any other tips for me? If you do, tell me quick before those teachers comeback and lose themselves in long-winded explanations again.”

I grin. I’m happy to help her. As we practice, I keep glancing at the clock and wishing for the end of the period. Is Ayden maybe already back in his room? It’s strange, but even though we saw each other only this morning, it feels like an eternity, and every part of me longs to see him again.

After training, I shower and dress in record time. Kate grins and asks, “What’s the rush today? You got somewhere to be?”

“Yup,” I say with a wink. That’s all she gets out of me because I don’t want to get held back explaining how Ayden and I hooked up.

“We usually have to wait for you,” Lucia says as she shoulders her school bag. “This is new.”

“Don’t get used to it,” I reply with a wink.

Lucia waves her hand. “If that’s your only character flaw...”

We leave the locker room together and step out into the corridor. I’ve barely taken two steps when a pair of strong arms wrap around me from behind and pull me against a warm, firm body. Ayden’s husky voice whispers into my ear, “Hey, I figured I’d pick you up from training.” I turn around, put my hands on his cheeks, and can’t get enough of this view.

“Good idea,” is all I get to say before he bends down and seals my lips with an intimate kiss that makes me forget everything around me. My fingers glide through his soft hair. I run my fingertips along his cheekbones, committing every detail of his beautiful face to memory, and it feels like my whole body is about to go up in flames.

“I don’t believe it,” I hear Lucia say, and I suddenly remember where we are. I let go of Ayden, who notices my embarrassment and grins.
