“As a friend, yes. But it’s different with you, and you should know that.”

I nod and think about what Vicky said. I recall the scene at the charity dinner.

“I saw you kiss her at the charity dinner, and you went out with Max.”

He puts his hand under my chin and forces me to look him in the eye. “I wanted to give you some space. That was the one thing you asked for, and I was trying to respect that because I didn’t want to hurt you any more than I already have. And yeah, I tried to distract myself. But it didn’t work, as I soon realized. And the thing with Max... I wouldn’t even call her a close friend, but we’ve known each other a while, and we hang out now and then, although normally in a group...” He shrugs. “She was having a hard time, and so was I. I figured it was okay to spend some time with her.”

“It was,” I concede.

I’m glad to hear this, and he’s right. But I find the Vicky situation hard to deal with. They’re so close, and I know they go back a long way.

“I hope you know how much I care about you,” he whispers, gazing at me with those gorgeous eyes.

I nod and then feel his lips softly brush mine. It’s like a sweet promise, an enticing call, which I’m only too happy to answer.

Chapter 26

Okay, it’s really simple,” Ayden tries again, pointing at the homework problem. It’s some kind of chemical process that occurs in the cells of key spirits that use the element of wind. But I just don’t get it.

Ayden and I both have a free period, and he’s helping me with my biology homework. We’re in the hunters’ library, which is totally empty at this time of day.

“Try to picture it. First, ATP is released inside the cell – that’s this part of the formula.” When he points at it, he has to lean across me, and I catch a whiff of his delicious scent. His arm accidentally brushes mine, and I feel the warmth coming off his skin. I’m thoroughly enjoying not having to hold back anymore, being able to be near him all the time. I lean into him and look at the side of his face – his focused expression, those long dark lashes framing his eyes, his full lips, which taste so incredible. I feel his muscles moving under my hands, and for a moment I’m totally distracted.

“I can tell by the way you’re looking at me that your mind is on something other than schoolwork,” he says with a grin, resting his chin on his fist and regarding me with amusement.

I roll my eyes and kiss him quickly. “Oh, you figure I’m that transparent? Maybe I’m just trying really hard to follow your explanation.”

He reaches out and runs his fingers along my arm, fixing his eyes on mine. “I think I can tell the difference.”

“You seem so sure of yourself.” I kiss him on the cheek and stand up. “I’ll go find a book on the topic. Maybe that will help because I still don’t understand this formula. Maybe you’re not as good at explaining things as you think,” I say with a wink.

I disappear behind one of the shelves and take a deep breath. How long can this go on, that I only have one thing on my mind when I’m around him?! I roll my eyes at myself and try to turn my thoughts to other things. I run my fingers along the spines of the books, but I can’t even read the titles properly. I’m supposed to be finishing my homework, which is due tomorrow. I really need to practice resisting Ayden’s charms.

“I doubt you’ll find anything here on that topic,” I hear him say in an amused voice. Ayden leans on the end of the shelf and points at the sign above his head, which readsClassical Literature.

I snort, but before I have time to say a word, he comes to me and kisses me so passionately that I gasp. I lean against the shelf behind me and put my hands on his strong back.

He runs his tongue along my neck and says, “You drive me crazy. I go out of my mind not being able to touch you every minute of every day.” As if to emphasize this, his kisses become more urgent, and I gladly open my lips for him.

His hands go to my waist, move down until they reach the hem of my sweater, and then push up under it. I suck in air and throw my head back. My chest rises and falls rapidly. I close my eyes for a moment and relish the feeling of his cool fingertips on my hot skin. His lips are on my earlobe, his breath tickling it. The tingling sensation in my belly spreads throughout my body andignites an irrepressible desire. A quiet moan escapes my throat, and I feel like I’ll scream if I can’t have him now. I caress his broad back and pull him harder against me, and I can feel him distinctly. He too seems scarcely able to contain himself.

Wild with passion, he turns my face toward him and kisses me, a soft moan in his throat. When I hear it, the deliciously sweet tingling in my body, which is already driving me insane, becomes so intoxicating that I can’t stand it any longer, and my fingers wander to the button of his jeans.

Now he can’t hold back either, and his hands slide up and gently cup my breasts. He caresses them, and I whisper his name hoarsely.

I seek out his lips like a drowning person, press mine against them and seal his mouth with a fiery kiss. His hand moves over my breast again, pushing my bra aside so that he can touch the skin, and that’s when I completely lose my self-control. I press myself against him and wrap my right thigh around his hip, at the same time fumbling with the button on his jeans – and right at that moment, the school bell rings, marking the end of the period.

I look up at him, panting. I see the same unbridled lust in his eyes that he must see in mine. He’s gasping for breath too, and neither of us is ready to stop. But the sound of a door opening thwarts our plans. We look at each other with this smoldering gaze, and then Ayden grins wryly, and I can’t help laughing quietly. The situation is too funny.

“Maybe we should continue this later somewhere else,” he says quietly, his tongue wandering along the curve of my neck again.

It’s cruel to ignite the fire in me again like that. I retaliate by running my hands over his jeans and whispering, “Let’s see, maybe you’ll be the one to have problems concentrating in the meantime.”

I kiss him again and hear him gasp, then I let go of him andcome out from behind the shelf. The two women seated at one of the tables look at me in surprise, which only increases when Ayden steps out to join me. It’s probably clear from our flushed faces what’s just been going on.

I hurry past them and can’t suppress a giggle. I take Ayden’s hand and walk with him to our next class.

“I just can’t believe it,” Lucia mutters for what must be the hundredth time, staring at me. “You and Ayden. I honestly didn’t see that coming.”
