Obscenities pour from my mouth. The cult’s chants grow louder, barely penetrating my frantic thoughts that search for a solution. Anything that will stop the hellish torment that is about to unfold.

“Please, God. Grant me the strength?—”

I don’t even realize I’ve yelled those words until Orpheus screams, “There isnoGod in heaven, boy. Just as there is no devil. There’s onlyme.” Then he grabs the base of his dick and shoves the head of his cock inside Mackenzie. She screams and twists, trying to get away, but with her legs and hands bound to the altar, there’s nowhere for her to go.

Her deafening shrieks fill the air as he shoves himself inside her, tearing her apart, violating the beautiful girl who means every damn thing to me.

Mackenzie’s eyes are squeezed shut, and she bites her lip so hard that when she releases it, blood beads before dripping down her chin.

“Mackenzie,” I hiss. “Look atme. Focus on me.”

Her eyes remain stubbornly closed, her face deathly pale, while her ear-piercing screams mix with the chants of the cult members. I continue struggling against the ropes, determined to get to her. Sweat drips from the ends of my hair into my eyes. Even though it stings, I ignore it, pleading with her.

“Angel, please. Open your eyes and look atme.”

The desperation in my voice cuts through her self-imposed prison. Amber eyes open, full of suffering and misery. I know mine mirrors hers because I’m feeling every bit of the pain Orpheus inflicts on her. Mackenzie barely blinks as she stares at me, her screams growing weaker.

“That’s my girl. Focus on me.” I take a deep breath, my mind frantically working. “This past summer, when we went to the carnival, you were terrified to get on the Ferris Wheel. You said you hated heights. But I convinced you.”

She gives a subtle nod, her eyes softening the slightest bit.

“I took your hand in mine, and I promised you I wouldn’t let anything happen to you. You hesitated for only a minute before you squeezed my fingers and said, ‘I trust you, Chase.’ Then you faced the Ferris Wheel head-on, your spine straight and shoulders squared. You looked like a warrior about to go into battle.”

A slight smile curves her lips. “I… remember,” she says through Orpheus’s punishing thrusts.

Although it fucking kills me that he’s violating her, I focus on distracting her. Taking her on a trip down memory lane to a simpler, better time.

“You settled into the seat without ever letting go of my hand. I sat beside you, my skin humming from touching you.” I continue struggling against the ropes as she nods, her eyes full of softness, moisture coating them. I don’t know if it’s from the memory or the pain, but I’d like to think it’s the memory.

“M-My skin… t-tingled, too,” she rasps out.

I smile at her confession, noting the pink tinge on her cheeks. It fuels me, so I keep going. “When the ride started moving, you turned as pale as a ghost. You held my hand in a death grip, your eyes frantically darting around as I worried you were going to pass out. As the Ferris Wheel climbed higher, you stared at the ground, gritting out, ‘Chase, I can’t. Get me down.’ I cupped your face, turning it to mine. Do you remember what I said?”

“E-Eyes on m-me. I won’t…” she winces as Orpheus growls, thrusting so hard he pushes her head closer to my dangling feet. “I won’t let you fall.”

“That’s right. And when we were at the top of the Ferris Wheel, you looked around…”Fuck, these ropes are shredding my skin. Agony courses through me, and I pause, sucking in a few quick breaths before I continue. “You smiled so brightly that all the lights surrounding you paled in comparison. Then you said, ‘I’m flying, Chase. It feels like I’m flying.’ Holding our joined hands in the air, you said, ‘We’re flying together.’ You were right, angel. I was flying with you. I’d never experienced anything like that before or since.”

Tears stream down her cheeks as she whispers, “Same.”

I’m so lost in the memory, so lost in her, that I’m completely unaware of the hell that surrounds us. Heaven exists, right here and now, as Mackenzie looks at me with something in her eyes that I always wished for but never thought possible.

She looks at me as though she’s in love with me.

I’m rudely pulled from the moment when a fist lands against my stomach. My body bows forward, and I catch a glimpse of the long metal blade in the cult member’s hand.

Closing my eyes, I wait for it to pierce my skin. Agony fills me as I begin sobbing.I don’t wanna die. Not after seeing the love in her eyes.I want to live. I want a chance with her, even if it’s wrong.

It’s not fucking fair, God. Why the hell do you torture me like this? What the fuck have I done that warrants all the hell you’ve put me through?

My eyes fly open as the loud ripping of the fabric of my robe stops me from pleading with a God that has repeatedly failed me. The cold air hits my skin as the man shreds it with the knife, nicking my back. I breathe a sigh of relief when he hands it to another cult member. But it’s short-lived as the cult member hands him a long whip.

Oh, fuck. My eyes are locked on it as the masked cult member snaps his wrist, the stinging of the whip against the floor reminding me of the hiss of a thousand snakes. My body is so tense it hurts as I squeeze my eyes closed, knowing what’s coming.

My body shakes from trepidation, my heart pounding like a drum as the thud of his boots tells me he’s behind me. Before I can exhale, the whip cracks against my skin, making me howl in agony.

Once my screams die down, Orpheus’s chilling tone draws my attention to him. “Feel like telling any cute stories now, boy?” he snarls, hatred and fury shining in his dark eyes.

The whip strikes my skin again, making my feet kick out as I scream.
