“You’re welcome. Although, you’re often a brat to me. You enjoy aggravating me.” I chuckle, shaking my head.

Mackenzie pretends to look horrified before plastering an innocent look on her face. “Who? Me? Come on. You know I’m an angel.” She blinks her long lashes at me, the playful smile on her lips making my insides quiver.

Jesus Christ. She’s making me come undone. But I can’t show it. That would be a huge mistake.

Rolling my eyes, I snort, shifting in the seat to discreetly adjust myself in my jeans. “Yeah, okay. Maybe when you’re sleeping.”

Her musical laughter fills the vehicle, making my heart skip a beat. Mackenzie’s presence has a magical effect on me. Everything about her draws me in, making me forget my troubles.

I glance over at her as I drive, warmth blooming inside my chest. The darkening woods surrounding the road blankets us in its quiet comfort. Being out here, alone with her, makes it seem like we’re the only two people in the world.

Mackenzie crosses her arms over her chest, pushing her bust against her shirt. I swallow hard, looking out the windshield, until her next words draw my attention back to her. “You’re not perfect either, Chase. I heard about your scuffle with Alex in the locker room.”

Evaluating her expression, I hide the smirk that wants to cross my face. Damned if she doesn’t beam with pleasure. She likes my possessiveness over her.“What do you mean?” It’s my turn to play innocent as I glance from her to the road.

“When Alex was running his mouth about me in the locker room, I heard you slammed him against the lockers wearing only a towel.” The blush visible in the shadows around us fills me with pleasure.

These moments between us are what I live for. The fact that she likes my possessiveness toward her adds an extra layer of complication to our already tumultuous relationship.

“Why? Does that turn you on? Me, clad only in a towel, defending your virtue?” I wiggle my brows flirtatiously, forgetting that she’s my foster sister. I’m caught up in this moment as she sits beside me, looking very much like a woman dressed for a date.

Mackenzie’s accelerated breathing causes her chest to heave, and my eyes drop to the cleavage revealed by the low-cut top and push-up bra she’s wearing.

Goddamn. My dick is so hard in my jeans.

A brown blur draws my attention back to the road.

“Chase, look out. It’s a deer,” Mackenzie screams, throwing herself across the console and grabbing the steering wheel. I’m stunned that she somehow managed to remove her seatbelt so quickly, but I’m even more shocked by her death grip on the steering wheel and the way she jerks it to the right side of the road.

“Mackenzie, let go.”

I’m fighting for control of the vehicle. Because of how hard she jerked the wheel, we’ve careened off the road and are heading toward a tree. Although I tap the brakes, I’m unable to pry her hands from the steering wheel. If I slam on the brakes, there’s a good chance Mackenzie will fly through the windshield, and there’s no way I’m risking that.

As the tires bounce over the rocky terrain, Mackenzie’s lithe form slams against me. I grip her tightly with one arm, not wanting her to get hurt as the huge tree trunk draws closer and closer.

I grip her protectively, knowing we’re going to crash.

CHASE

Icling to Mackenzie, refusing to let go of her. Determination courses through me as the chant rolls through my head.Don’t let go of her. Keep her safe. Her screams are deafening, and I know damn well she’s reliving the accident that killed her brother.

The splintering bark mixes with the horrific crunch of metal as the vehicle jerks to a stop.

With shaking hands, I peel Mackenzie’s fingers from the steering wheel. Turning her face to mine, I assess her, noting her wide, panicked eyes, her quick, shallow breathing, and the way her body tremors from the panic gripping her.

“Mackenzie. Stay with me, sweetheart.” My hands smooth her long blonde tresses away from her pale face, frowning when I see the bump on her forehead. The contusion doesn’t appear to be severe, so I focus on pulling her from the throes of the attack that has its claws firmly entrenched in her.

She blinks. “Chase. I can’t… Breathe.”

Lifting her, I settle her on my lap so she’s facing me. “Look at me, Kenz. Breathe with me.” I demonstrate, watching as she mimics my breathing. My right hand discreetly slides to the center console, where I keep a bottle of Mackenzie’s anxiety pills in the event of an emergency. Grasping the bottle, I pull it out and remove the cap. “Open for me, angel.” I hold up the small pill. “I have a Xanax for you.”

Mackenzie complies, and I put the pill inside her mouth, watching as she swallows it.

“Until it begins to work, focus on me, Kenz. What color are my eyes?”

“Umm… Whiskey. They remind me… Of my grandfather’s favorite drink.”
