Page 117 of Stuck Behind Her

“Now go annoy them and leave me alone,” Aurora pleads, lying her head onto the arm rest. She closes her eyes, as the girls run to the guys’ room. I really hope they’re awake. They’re already bound to fight; I’d rather they be in a good mood.

I then turn to Aurora, who shifts uncomfortably on the couch. “Do you want a pillow?” I ask her.

She opens her eyes and nods. I smile, getting up to grab one from the room. I return to the living room, handing it to her. She places it under her head, and rests on it.

“Anything else?”

“No. I’ll probably be fine if I get some sleep,” she utters, closing her eyes again. Sleepless nights suck, even without being sick. No one knows that better than me.

Aurora rests on the couch while I tidy things up. I’m glad I decided to cancel, she wouldn’t have survived going, given how sick she looks. She shouldn’t be alone, and I’m glad I stayed with her. I mean, I canceled yesterday for my own reasons. It’s fair I canceled today for her.

Someone stomps into the room. “Val, did you tell Ellie and Elaina that Elias and I have to take them out somewhere?” Lorenzo asks, almost shouting. I look toward him.

“Lorenzo, calm down. Aurora isn’t feeling well, so she and I are staying here. Ellie and Elaina want to go out, and they suggested that you guys go with them. I told them to ask you, that’s all. I didn’t say you have to do anything,” I reply, explaining the situation.

Elias then follows Lorenzo into my room, looking just as angry. “With us? Did they really have hope we’d say yes?” he points out.

I let out a sigh. At least they’re agreeing on something. That they want nothing to do with each other.

“Come on, you’re not going to clear things up if you don’t talk. If you just talked to each other, you’d understand everything. Plus, I’m just asking you guys to take them out. You probably won’t even talk to the other,” I explain, walking until I’m standing in front of them.

“You agree with them? Vi, I would rather take them both myself,” Lorenzo states.

“Of course I agree with them. If you haven’t noticed, I don’t want you two to fight. You guys won’t see each other for another year or two, are you really going to leave on bad terms?” I ask.

“Yes,” they both answer simultaneously. A pain squeezes my chest.

“Please, all I am asking is that you two take Ellie and Elaina out and don’t fight. Is that such a hard thing to do?”

“Yes!” they shout again.

This gets Aurora’s attention. “Shut up, both of you. You’re both so annoying,” she mutters in a sleepy voice. I raise my hand to my head.

“Lorenzo, please. I just need you to calm down and go with him today. Is that so hard?” I plead.

“Yes, it is, because I don’t take these things so lightly,” he states, and something in me snaps. Something in my chest. I don’t know what happens to me.

“Neither do I, we both know that,” I argue. He drops his head.

Elias turns to Lorenzo. “See, even she’s telling you I did nothing. What will it take for you to understand?” he shouts at him. I drop my head into the palms of my hands.

“When she’s not miserable, I’ll think about it.”

“You’re the one making her miserable.”

“Oh my God, stop. Don’t take them, then. God, just please stop fighting. I’ll figure something out, I’ll do something for them from home, just stop!” I shout now. The pain in my chest grows, and I feel like I don’t have control of my body.

Lorenzo takes a step forward. “Val, I’ll take them alone—”

“No. No, I’ll do something, I don’t need you guys to do anything more. All I asked is that the two of you calm down, but you can’t keep it together for one minute. For God’s sake, I make one mistake, and the world has to end!” I lash out at both of them, running into my bedroom and slamming the door closed.

I drop onto the floor, my back against the door. I take deep breaths, trying not to lose control. This is too much. I can’t do this anymore. Everything is a mess and it’s my fault. I don’t know how to fix it. And now I’m lashing out on them when it’s not even their fault. They’re just two victims, ones I have angered and hurt.

I don’t think I can take this anymore.
