Page 12 of Stuck Behind Her

“Is she rich by any chance?”

“No,” she answers so I turn back to look at Lorenzo. Lorenzo doesn’t know just anyone. Especially in Los Angeles.

“Then how do you know her?” I interrogate him.

“Nothing. Don’t worry about it.” He smiles slightly. Now I’m going to worry about it until we get there. He’s obviously hiding something from me. Guess I’ll have to wait and see.

After a while, we stop in front of a white-and-beige two-story house. There are a lot of cars in front. Damn, how many people are going to be at this gathering?

“Here you are,” Lorenzo says as he parks and opens the back-seat door, allowing Ellie to step out of the car. Lorenzo looks around. “You should follow her. She’ll get lost,” he warns me. Something is definitely up, but he’s right; I’m going to follow her. I get out of the car, eyeing Lorenzo. He closes both doors, keeping the windows open.

“Where are you going? You have to take me back,” I remind him. A grin appears on his face.

“Just remember I’m doing this for you,” he says. What does he mean? He then turns his car around and drives off.

“Lorenzo, hey!” I yell, throwing my hands into the air. What the hell? How am I supposed to get back?Rude!

“Elaina!” I hear Ellie call. I turn around to see her run and hug someone. It’s a girl with light brown hair, who’s just about the same height as Ellie. I guess that’s Elaina. I repeat the name in my head. Where do I know that name from?

“Violet?” I hear my name called. I look around to see who the person is, when I spot a familiar face. Suddenly, it hits me. Elaina Williams. That’s where I know the name from. God, no.

“Aurora. Hey.” I greet apathetically. He knew. He sent me down because he knew she was here.Oh my God, Lorenzo. I need a break.

“Hi. What are you doing here?” she asks, coming closer. I’m dying, that’s what I’m doing. This is bad. This is very bad. It was bad enough Elias was in the school, knowing me as Violet. How did I not know Elaina was Aurora’s sister, my sister’s friend.

“Hey Aurora,” Ellie answers, before I have a chance to. “This is my sister. She came with me. Though she was—” I stare her in the eye, and she immediately stops talking, turning back to Elaina. This is horrible. This is very very bad. Ellie is known withher last name, a last name that connects me to Lorenzo. They’ll only have to think for one minute to notice.God, I’m going to kill myself. I really can’t be exposing my identity this fast.

“You’re Ellie’s sister?”

“Yep, that’s me.” I attempt to smile. How did I not know Elaina was Elaina Williams? Goes to prove how little I know about my family.

“I thought you looked familiar,” Aurora says. That could’ve been from so many places, if I’m being honest.

“Well, I better go. I have things to do.” I excuse myself, turning around before remembering that Lorenzo left. He hates me, I’m sure of it.

“Do you have a ride?” she asks. I did.

“I’m going by bus. My ride ditched me,” I say, taking out my phone to check when the next bus is due and see that it’s in thirty minutes. “Which should come in thirty minutes, so I better rush to the stop.” I point to the road. I want to cry. Why am I so unlucky?

“How about you come with me? I’m with Elias, but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind taking you. Thirty minutes is a long time to wait,” she offers. Elias. I would rather die than go with Elias. Especially right now, since he actually knows Violet Hart. I’ll walk home if I have to.

“It’s okay. Don’t worry about me. I’ll probably end up calling someone to get me,” I tell her. I could have avoided all this if Lorenzo just waited for me.

“You sure? I mean, you don’t have to bother anyone. I swear Elias wouldn’t mind,” she says. “Trust me, he isn’t that rude.”

“I can wait. Don’t worry about me. I’m sure he’s busy.”

“He’s not,” Aurora insists. “He’s free today. We were going for a drive anyway. We can drop you on the way.”

Why is she trying to be nice? Can’t she just not care? Just this once? But I can’t say no. She’s trying to be nice, and she’s onlyknown me for a day. Plus, she’s asked me like five times already, and I’d feel guilty saying no again. I mean, I don’t think life is planning on getting any worse than this.

I sigh. This is what Lorenzo wanted, I just know it. He wants me to warm up to Elias. Maybe even Aurora, though I don’t actually have anything against her.

“Fine. But only this time,” I tell her. She smiles.

“Come on, follow me.”

I do as she says, and we cross the street and walk for a couple of seconds before we see a car, which I’m guessing belongs to Elias. I’m dreading this. It’s going to be weird and awkward. Maybe I should just run away. No, that would be even worse since I’ll see them tomorrow.
