“No.”

“Yes, I am. You didn’t do anything wrong; I just make bad choices.”

He tilts his head, a hurt but calm look on his face. He reaches over and places his hand to the back of my neck, bringing forward a part of my hair. His finger grazes my skin, sending chills through my body.

“I want you to do what you want,” he whispers. “It’s not a bad decision if others don’t like it, as long as you’re okay. If you want me to stay away from you, I will. Whatever you want.” His tone is like some kind of melody, soothing my skin.

“I don’t know what I want. I don’t know that I won’t make a mistake.”

“Then don’t. I’ll wait. No matter how long it takes you, Violet. I’ll wait.”

I stop for a second. Violet. “You called me Violet,” I mention.

His expression brightens slightly. “I guess I’m still getting used to calling you Val.” He drops his hand to his side. A small spark appears in his eyes. I don’t know what it is, but it’s not sadness. Or anger. It’s something of peace or hope.

My heart starts to feel lighter, and my body is floating on air. There’s a fluttering feeling that enters my stomach, but it’s not a bad one. Not one of stress or guilt. One of comfort. “Thanks, Elias,” I whisper.

“For what?” he whispers back.

“For being you.”

His face softens, a smile forming on his lips. I lean into his arm, resting my head there. In his comfort. He slides his hand into mine, squeezing it slightly. A sense of peace hits my body, but a troubling feeling of unease still twists in my stomach. Things are going to get better. I just have to get back to LA. I just need to clear my head, and everything will be okay. Lorenzo and I will go back to normal. I’ll go visit him through the year. I’ll fix everything, and everything will go back to normal. I know it will. It almost always does.

Aurora and I sit on the floor, both leaning onto the coffee table. My laptop is open on the checklist as we scroll through the options of what we can do today. We haven’t been out for a while, so we are planning to go out.We have one week left before we return to LA, so I want to do as much as possible to make up for the last couple of days.

Where we’re going, however, is what we are trying to figure out.

“Okay, so Ellie and Elaina went out not long ago. So, we don’t need to find a placeforthem,” Aurora points out, leaning back and turning to me.

“Yeah, but we don’t want them to climb on our backs and start complaining,” I answer. She sighs, resting her back to the edge of the couch.

“Can’t we just do a park or lake again. It’s the safest option.”

I scroll down to one of the options. I mean, I have park activities that we haven’t visited yet. It is the safest option, as she said. They can’t complain at a park or garden, and they’ll have things to do. “You’re right. We can pick one from the checklist,” I tell her, shutting the laptop closed.

“Then that’s done. Next topic,” Aurora announces, sitting straight again. I turn my body to her, giving her a confused look. What topic? “Elias and Lorenzo. They’re confusing me, and I have no idea what’s going on anymore, but it feels like something has changed. What I mean is, if you’re comfortable with it, I want an update,” she clarifies. An update.

I haven’t talked to her about the situation at all. She isn’t like Elias; she has to try pick up clues or look into things to figure them out. I’ve heard Lucas is like that, and that she gets it from him. It makes sense, Lucas tries his best to look into things, ever since the news about his friend came out.

“It’s nothing. Lorenzo and I kinda had an argument on New Year’s, and now he finally believes me. He and Elias talked, and now they’re good.”

Aurora nods her head. “That’s good. How about you?” she asks. How about me? I don’t know. Things are still mixed up with me.

I take a deep breath. “Lorenzo and I haven’t talked yet, I think he’s still processing everything. I’m fine with it, as long as he resolves everything with Elias. He needs a break from me, anyway. And I talked to Elias last night, and I think we’re good,” I tell her. Ithinkwe’re good, but I don’t know for sure. He said he’d wait for my answer, for my decision. That he’d accept whatever it is.

I think that means we’re good. I hope it does.

“I’m sure you and Lorenzo will sort everything out.”

I smile at her. She barely knows anything. I feel horrible, if I’m being honest, for how I pushed her away the day she figured out what had happened. She was trying to comfort me, but I just pushed her away. I made a dumb choice, like I always do.

“Personally, I can’t wait for things to go back to normal,” she adds, her face lighting up.

“Why’s that?” I question, furrowing my eyebrows.

“To tease the hell out of them. Do you know how long they’ve been mocking me for idolizing you. They say I’m obsessed with you, they should look at who’s talking,” she jokes, causing me to let out a chuckle. I can agree with her on that. “I’m just glad everything is getting better.”

I see the relief in her eyes, but some type of worry is still in there. “I’m sorry about everything with Elias,” I apologize. He’s her cousin, like her brother from what I’ve heard. Her only best friend, before me. If I’m even considered a friend.
