Page 45 of Stuck Behind Her

“Your friend isn’t looking all formal looking today. Seems unusual,” I tell Lorenzo, turning my head to him. He stares into their direction, still analyzing the scene.

“That can’t be good,” he mentions. I figured.

“Aurora also looks annoyed,” I add. Lorenzo pries his eyes off the two of them, turning to me with a more concerned look now.

“That’s a sign telling me that I need to go check on my friend,” he tells me, then runs toward them. I follow behind him, jogging toward the mystery. Lorenzo drops his backpack to the floor, then sits down opposite Aurora, next to his friend, and places his hand on Elias’s shoulder.

“Hey. You okay?” Lorenzo asks him as I kneel down to sit in front of them.

“Great,” Elias replies, a hint of anger taking over his tone. Aurora throws her hands into the air angrily before ranting.

“I can’t believe it, this is so stupid!” she shouts, crossing her arms over her chest.

“What’s wrong? Did something happen?” I finally get myself to speak, asking as my gaze switches between the two. Elias drops his head down, running both his hands through his hair to tidy it up.

“Obnoxious, arrogant people, that’s what happened.” Aurora is the one to reply, holding herself from cursing. I’m still confused. I look to Lorenzo, who unlike me, understands what’s going on. He drops his hand from Elias’s shoulder before speaking.

“What did he do this time?” Lorenzo asks, as if this has happened more than once. Elias turns to look at Lorenzo.

“Nothing. Absolutely nothing,” he replies, but even I know that’s a lie. Lorenzo finally turns his gaze to me, and I raise my brows at him.

“Roland.” That’s all Lorenzo has to whisper for me to understand. Elias once said that Roland wasn’t the best father. I think whatever is happening now is proof of that. Aurora twists her whole body, narrowing her eyes.

“No, not nothing. He’s moving him to New York, that’s what he’s doing,” Aurora shouts out, causing both mine and Lorenzo’s eyes to widen in shock. New York? All the way to New York? And what does she mean “he’s moving him”?

“You guys are moving?” Lorenzo exclaims, tugging on Elias’s arm. He doesn’t answer though. He just sits there, staring down at his twiddling fingers.

“But Roland’s whole business is here. Why would he move?” I ask. Roland wouldn’t do that; risk his company’s stats and growth. Not unless something very important came up, and nothing that drastic comes to mind.

“Exactly!” Aurora adds, her face turning a light rose-pink color. I turn back to Elias for an answer, which he attempts to avoid giving. But being under the scrutiny of Lorenzo’s stares is enough to make him speak.

A sigh leaves his mouth before he gives a brief explanation, “We had an argument, it’s not anything serious.” His words are calmer than before, like he’s drained all the irritation out and now he’s emotionally empty.

“Not serious? Yes, because not being serious takes you to another state,” Lorenzo points out, his voice raising volume slightly. I think we all know that whatever happened was serious, due to Roland’s reaction. No matter how much Elias denies it.

“Yes. That’s why it’s stupid, because it’s not serious,” Aurora answers Lorenzo. She crosses her arms again, leaning her back on the wall.

“It’s nothing, okay. Aurora’s upset, it shouldn’t be a surprise. It isn’t something everyone needs to be here for, nor is it something serious,” Elias tells Lorenzo, although I suspect the words are directed to me as well. His face remains are neutral, unlike both Aurora and Lorenzo next to him. Aurora still looks infuriated—I don’t blame her—staring at the wall with eyes blazing enough they could burn a hole through it. But beneath that I see her hanging onto some thread, trying not to let out any pain or sadness she feels.

Lorenzo, on the other hand, is still looking to Elias for a plausible answer. One he isn’t generalizing. “Come on, you need to give me something, or I’ll just think of the worst. Trust me, you don’t know how bad the worst is,” Lorenzo presses him. Elias then looks at me, keeping his eyes there for some time, before opening his mouth to speak.

He hesitates, but finally blows out a sigh before explaining. “He’s angry that I apparently defied him, and for the first time Ididn’t listen because the defiance was nothing important in his case. He didn’t take that lightly, and now he’s moving. That is it.”

“What did you do that’s so offensive to him?” Lorenzo asks. I am so confused right now. What’s happening?

“Nothing. Roland is just an obnoxious asshole who thinks money is the one important thing in this world,” Aurora spits out, rolling her eyes. That’s not a surprise. A sigh leaves Elias’s mouth as I shift my gaze between them, trying to get a clearer understanding of what’s going on.

“I’m apparently not looking into his suggested list of people that I should mingle with enough. He’s angry about someone I know,” Elias continues.

I take a second to process what he said. I don’t really understand what he means until I see the way his eyes glance at me. That glance, that deep, but short glance, is all that I need to know what he’s implying.

“Me?” I question, raising my voice. “I’mthe problem?”

“Wait, he’s angry because of Violet?” Lorenzo says. Aurora doesn’t answer, folding her legs in front of her and resting her head on her knees.

“He said he doesn’t want me hanging out with ‘middle-class’ people.” Elias raises both his hands and imitates quotations. Wow. Middle-class people.

“Oh my God, is Roland serious? When you said he wouldn’t let you hang out with me, I thought you were joking,” I retort, irritation rising inside me. I mean, I knew Roland was arrogant, but I didn’t think he was this arrogant. Most importantly, I didn’t think he would force it on his son.
