He laughs, crossing his arms. “You really don’t like studying, do you?”

“No. I don’t care about my marks, whether you believe it or not. And it’s only science, I’m fine in everything else,” I clarify. I hold my hand out to stop him when we get to the corner and turn around to enter the small walkway.

“Then why did you accept my offer?” he asks a lot of questions. I finally turn my head to look at him.

“You want the truth?” He nods his head, and we both stop walking. “Because I didn’t want to reject you. You looked like you wanted to help, and I appreciate someone who cares. I couldn’t care less about my marks,” I tell him.

“So, you forced yourself to come? For me?” He raises his eyebrows.

“Not for you. Because I appreciate help, that’s all. I would’ve done it for anyone. Don’t let your pride take over,” I warn, narrowing my eyes. He rolls his eyes and continues to walk.

“Okay, we won’t study if you don’t want to. I’m not doing it for myself, I’m doing it for you. If you don’t want to, you don’thave to waste your time,” he says. Thank God. I really don’t want to have to do this. I close my eyes in relief but turn around with a calm expression.

“Well, we’re already here, I’m not going back after I got ready,” I say, acting like I’m hurt by his sudden shift in plan. I am not, I would rather do anything except study.

“Well, you said you want to go to the café, so we’ll go. You also said you want to warm up to me, so this sounds like a good time for you to try that,” he points out. I’ve already warmed up to him, ever since the fainting incident. But I haven’t told him that. I’ll let him think he hasn’t earned my trust yet, just to make sure. I also do still want iced coffee.

“Okay, deal,” I agree. We walk until we get to the café and stand at the counter. They don’t change their decorations much, and they don’t expand or anything. Which is really convenient for me, if they become a big café I’ll have to stop coming as Valentina.

“What do you want?” he asks.

“I’ll pay myself, thank you,” I tell him.

“Come on, I dragged you here, and both of us paying will be complicated. I won’t tell my dad, don’t worry,” he says. He’s right, I can’t offer to pay for his drink because I’m not supposed to be handing out money like it’s nothing. I sigh.

“Iced coffee,” I answer, and his eyes squint.

“Iced coffee? Who drinks coffee cold?” he asks, and I gasp exaggeratingly. How dare he? Iced coffee is the best drink to exist in the world of drinks. How dare he offend my baby like that.

“Everyone. Iced coffee is, like, superior to any other drink. Have you never had it?” I ask.

“No. Coffee is meant to be hot in the Miller household.”

Oh my God. Roland, that bastard. How dare he never let his son taste the greatness of iced coffee. I hate him even more now.

“You have to try it. How can you go on with your life without trying iced coffee?” I question, still exaggerating. He chuckles.

“Okay, okay, I’ll try it. Whatever you say. Even though cold coffee sounds weird,” he says. I roll my eyes and decide to ignore his insult since he hasn’t even tried the drink yet. I’ll give him a chance.

He orders the drinks, and we wait until they’re both done. Instead of sitting down, we decide to walk through the streets instead. I sip through the cold, bitter-but-sweet drink. How could anyone not love iced coffee? It is literally the only thing keeping me sane. Elias, walking next to me, also drinks it, but slower. Which is okay, I’m not judging. It’s his first time.

We both finish the drinks and throw them in the trash. I’m surprised, if I’m being honest. He finished the whole cup in the first try, not everyone manages to do that.

“So, did you like it?” I ask him.

“No, it was horrible.” He shakes his head. Excuse me?

“Then how the hell did you finish the whole thing?” I ask, confused, widening my eyes. He twists his head to look at me.

“You were excited for me to try it; I didn’t want to disappoint you.” He smiles. My expression softens, along with the rest of my body.

“You’re lying. You drank the whole thing just because I was excited for you to try it?” I exclaim, my legs stopping suddenly. Elias stops beside me, turning around so that we’re facing each other.

“Now we’re equal.”

The words are like a flame inside my body, my skin burning with it. His brown eyes shine, the lights of the street reflecting on them. They pierce through me, along with his bright smile. My smile slips and I look away, taking a deep breath as I try to gain some sense of calm and control.

“You’re crazy,” I say, raising my gaze again.
