Page 80 of Stuck Behind Her

“Yes. You can see him now,” the doctor tells us, and Aurora pushes past him without a second thought.

“Dios mio.” I hear her mutter under her breath as she walks in. The doctor turns around, trying to identify what she said. He gives in, entering the room after her.

What am I going to tell Violet? She’s going to freak out if I tell her his arm is broken. For almost three months at that. She should be in her meeting now. I know I promised I’d tell her immediately, but I’m going to worry her if I tell her while she’s with Oliver. She’s probably stressed even as it is.

But if I don’t tell her, she’s going to keep worrying. She’s going to keep expecting the worst. Telling her will at least give her closure. I take out my phone from my pocket and open my text exchange with her. I send her a text with an update, making sure to tell her that Elias is okay. I know she’ll need to hear that.

After a few minutes of leaving Aurora and Elias alone, I approach the room and knock on the door twice, before walking in. In front of me is a patient bed, covered in plastic paper. Both Aurora and Elias are sitting on it, and they turn to me. Elias’s arm is wrapped in white bandages, keeping it straight, and it’s accompanied by a black arm sling. He’s calm, but some pain is visible on his face.

“Hey Elias. You doing okay?” I ask him, standing at the door frame.

He nods his head before answering, “Hey Enzo. Yeah, as long as my arm isn’t touched or moved, I can handle it,” he answers. I walk closer, moving away from the door.

“I called Aunt Emily, and her and Roland are coming in to discuss the details and fees with the school,” Aurora announces, turning between the two of us.

Val told me she would take care of the costs, but I can’t say that out loud. She’s stressed now, and she needs to keep her identity secret. I can work with finding an excuse for Elias alone.

“It’s covered. The school has the fees covered, don’t worry about it. But I need to talk to you,” I shift my gaze to Elias. He looks confused, squinting his eyes slightly. Aurora gets what I mean and excuses herself before leaving the room. I close the door behind her and return to Elias.

Unlike Aurora, I stand in front of him instead of sitting. He twists his body so that he’s facing me. “So, what did you want to talk about?” he asks.

“Well, first, are you okay? I know you’ve already answered that, but you could’ve been lying so as not to worry Aurora,” Isay. His other hand rests on his lap, and I notice it’s his right. Well, at least it’s his non-dominant hand that’s been fractured.

“I’m fine. I mean, obviously it’s painful, but I’ll deal with it,” he replies.

A strong metal ladder fell directly at his hand, of course it’s painful. They probably filled his mouth with painkillers to stop him from feeling too much pain. But at least he’s okay.

I mean, I only see him for one week every one to two years, but my friendship with him is probably stronger than most of my other usual friendships. Except Val, of course. Despite his father, he’s a good person. It pains me to see how bland his life is, and I always have the urge to give some life to it when I can. I mean, he lives with Roland Miller, the most boring person in the world. He needs some fun in his life.

“Second, the school isn’t covering the bill, obviously,” I tell him.

A sigh leaves his lips. “I knew you were lying.”

Of course, he did. If it weren’t for his dad, I’d say this guy could turn out to be some detective.

“But it is covered. Fully,” I continue.

“By whom? If it’s you, then no. I don’t need someone paying, my dad will pay whether he wants to or not. It’s not really his choice this time.”

I cross my arms around my chest. If he’s denying my payment, I can only imagine what he’ll do when he knows it was Val.

“It’s not me, don’t worry. But you’re not going to like the real answer either, because it’s Violet,” I say.

His brows furrow, and he sits up straight. “Violet? Of course not! I’m not letting her pay any part of it,” he insists. Too late for that.

“She feels obligated to. She knows Roland, she doesn’t want you to have to deal with him or anything,” I explain.

He shakes his head. “No. I can’t take that much from her. It isn’t her job to pay, my dad can’t cause a problem when it comes to medical things. It isn’t even much, since this is a school doctor.”

“She feels guilty, Elias. If she doesn’t pay it, she’s going to feel guilty for a long time. And she doesn’t need that, considering she’ll probably already feel guilty for your injury for a long time.”

He shakes his head again. “No. No, I’m not taking it.”

“Well, it’s kind of too late for that, since the payment information is already with the school,” I tell him.

His eyes widen at me, as I expected they would. I knew he would react like this. “What? How could you do that without telling me?” he shouts, questioning.

“The nurse found me and asked, I think they thought I was related to you. I told her it was being covered,” I explain again.
