“I’m not failing, it’s just complicated okay,” he says before leaving.

Violet smiles, then sits next to me. Her smile is vibrant and genuine. If I weren’t already in flames, I know it would send warmth across my body.

“I thought you were doing okay,” she says.

“I am. This is normal.”

“Do you need anything? Medicine? Water?”

“No, I’m good, don't worry. You should get to class, too. I’ll be fine.”

She widens her eyes at me. “If this is fine, then I’m sure I need to stay,” she says. Even with the fatigue, I’m able to smile.

“Violet, I told you, this is normal. You don’t have to worry about me,” I assure her.

She sighs, standing up and dusting her knitted shirt. “If you need anything, Art is a very easy class to skip,” she says before running off.

I can’t believe she’s Valentina. I can’t believe I love Valentina. I can imagine how Aurora would react knowing that. She’s just like Aurora described her. I didn’t think that was possible to be honest. And I most certainly never thought the person I’d fall in love with would be a celebrity. I never thought I’d meet one. Yet here I am.

I then hear a voice again. “If you’re planning on sleeping safely, maybe you should do it somewhere other than the hallway,” I hear Violet warn me. I look back at her as she sits down in front of me, on her knees.

“I thought you were going to class,” I tell her. From here, I see her eyes clearly. A hue of green in them, behind the brown. Now I know where they come from. Even with my eyes burning, I can still see her clearly. How pretty she is. No matter her eye color, or her hair color, she’s absolutely beautiful.

“I am. I had to go to my locker, remember.” She extends her hand, holding a cup. “It’s tea. It’ll help. Accept it.”

“I told you I don’t need anything.”

“I know, but with the number of times you’ve helped and listened to me, I owe you at least this.” She leans her head to the side.

“How much do I need to pay you?” I ask her.

“Drink it. That’s what you need to pay me,” she demands. I let out a small laugh before taking a sip.

“Happy?”

“A lot.” She then smiles. That smile, it’s everything. It gives light to her face, to her eyes. She pushes back up to stand. “Well, I still promised I was going to go to class, so I better get there before the bell goes,” she tells me.

“Mm-hmm, you really should,” I answer, nodding my head.

“Get better,” she says, continuing back to class. My eyes follow her trail as she leaves, the hot cup still in my hands.

And suddenly, I’m better.

Chapter 56 – Ventinove

Val

The last sentence of the book, on the last day of the week, on the last day of school before the winter break. It’s funny, I can’t believe the time is done already. It’s my last day coming to this school, and I don’t know whether to be happy or sad. I’m finally going to have a break, more rest. More time to work. But it feels empty. I think this is what a hangover is like. I’m getting ready for my post-event hangover.

I’ll announce the winners on the eighteenth. Not too far away. Everything is officially ready for the event and for the concerts. All the winners are in, and even the guest seats have been secured for extra reassurance. I also have my own guest spot, but I don’t know if Lorenzo will go with me. He might want to stay and spend time with Pierre. He might want to stay and just have a break. I still need to ask him.

I finish the last sentence of the book in my hand, which I have been reading since I came here. I’m finishing the book, justas I am finishing everything else. But things have to go on. I shut the book, placing it on the floor in front of me, then look up at Elias.

“Done,” I announce. He’s seated in front of me, one leg bent up. He’s in a black knitted sweater, and white pants. They fit him in my opinion, but I wouldn’t admit that out loud. His book is already in front of him, closed. “Wait, you finished?” I exclaim when seeing the book.

“Thirty minutes ago.” He smiles.

“Why didn’t you say?” I ask him, furrowing my eyebrows.
