He hesitates for a second, before accepting my hug. I don’t think I’ll ever find a friend like him. As good as him. I hope he forgives me. I hope that he still thinks the same about me after he finds out what I did.

Chapter 60 – Venticinque

Lorenzo

“You really don’t have to stay. I’m sure Ellie can wait until I come back, it’s not like she sleeps,” Val points out, just about to leave the house.

She has to do some extra work tonight. She’s planning to take a break tomorrow, so she can be fully rested when we depart for New York. Ellie, however, has schoolwork. It’s one of those projects they assign through the break. But Ellie doesn’t want to have to worry about it while we’re in New York, so we’re finishing it today. I mean, she and I are finishing it today.

“You’ll be tired when you come back. I’ll help her, don’t worry about it,” I assure Val. She smiles softly, and I can see how tired she is just by looking at her eyes. Hopefully New York will be more of a break for her.

The event might look like a way to gain fans to everyone else, but I know it’s different for her. She would’ve had a whole system if it was that serious. This is more important for her. Val wants friends. She didn’t have many growing up, other than me, and I’m not here all the time. I’m glad she’s doing this, it’ll help her.

Leaving Los Angeles will be hard, because it will be leaving Val again. Her moving here was hard enough. This is going to bepainful all over again. I wish I could spend every second with her until the day I leave. But I know Val. If I tell her anything, she’ll cancel the whole trip. I don’t want her to do that. I want all of this to be normal. Until I leave.

She then leaves her house, closing the door behind her. I turn to Ellie, who’s sitting on the floor with crossed arms and a frown. This is going to be hard. “Okay, so what’s the project about?” I ask, sitting on the floor in front of her.

“I don’t want your help,” she whines. She’s stubborn, what can I say?

“Would you rather make Val work on it after she comes home and tire her even more?” I point out. She rolls her eyes at me, before beginning to explain the project. Ha, I win. This is such an achievement.

It takes us about two hours to finish the model and poster she needs. It’s about some science thing, but then again, I didn’t focus on the information, more about the design. The information is her thing.

“Okay, now all I need to do is write a script and memorize it, which I’ll do tomorrow with Elaina,” Ellie tells me.

“You’re going to Elaina’s?” I ask, confused. Shouldn’t Elaina be busy packing with her sister and cousin. It’s funny, it’s like the whole family is coming.

“Yeah. She wants to see me one more time before we go to New York. I didn’t know it was so fun listening to her tell me she’s going on the trip, knowing that I’m going but she doesn’t.”

I laugh at her words. “Your sister has had to do that for a long time,” I tell her. There’s apparently a thrill about being talked about by someone clueless. I wouldn’t know, since I don’t have that many secrets.

Ellie grabs her things and places them in the corner, organizing them in their bags. “Well, I hope she feels better by then. I’m not Mom.” She sighs.

“If she sleeps, she’ll be fine.”

“I’m not talking about her being tired.”

I look at her, narrowing my eyes in confusion. “What else would you be talking about?” I ask.

She stops what she’s doing and turns to me. “You don’t know? I thought she told you everything?”

“I did, too. What are you talking about, Ellie?” I ask again, more demanding now.

“Well, Mom and Val were talking the other day—yes, I was eavesdropping—and, well, do you know Elias Miller? Elaina’s cousin?” she asks.

“Of course I do,” I tell her. Why would she even ask me that? And what does Elias have to do with anything?

She returns to sit in front of me now. “Well, he and Vi kissed, and now she’s troubled about it,” she almost whispers.

I freeze. My eyes widen. What? They kissed. Elias and Val kissed.

“When?” I press.

“I think it was on Friday,” she tells me, and my chest gets tighter. Friday. That’s why she left early. Why Elias was acting weird. He kissed her.

She’s troubled about the kiss. Why would she be troubled? She went home after. Elias. What did he do?

“Your project is done, right?” I ask Ellie. She nods her head. “Great, I need to go.” I stand up and head to the door, putting on my jacket. My blood heats up in my body. He did something. To Val. And he’s going to pay for it.
