Chapter 1

I have had this moment planned for over a month now. It was not easy getting everything into place, but I think my girl needs this, even if she does not know to ask for it. I have spoken with Dr. K a few times about my plan to ensure it runs smoothly. Though she thinks it will be overwhelming, she believes this is the closure that Evie might need.

She scans the area the moment I escort her off the plane and towards the Aston Martin Valhalla waiting at the end of the tarmac.

“Lex, are we in my hometown?”

I nod, opening her door. Hesitantly, she gets in, her brows pinched in confusion. I walk around to the driver's side and take a deep breath before facing her again. She is going to have so many questions.

“Please explain?” she asks, sorrow and pain lacing her voice. “Why would you bring me here?”

Pressing the keyless ignition, I make my way to my newly acquired property, driving carefully because of the precious cargo in my trunk.

“Do you trust me, Princess?” I rest my hand on her knee. She stares at it before looking out the window.

“Sometimes, I question if I should. This is one of those times.”

Taking her hand in mine, I bring it to my lips.

“You can always trust me. You know I love you and only want good things for you.”

“There’s nothing good here, Batman. Just suffering.” Evie turns to face me with glassy eyes.

Squeezing her hand, I place it on my thigh as we take the scenic route, winding through the hills before finally approaching the spread of land I recently purchased. When I get through the gates and to the top of the hill, what greets us is a flattened surface where a house once stood at the end of the drive.

Evie sucks in a harsh breath as tears start to fall. I make no move to wipe them away though, there is no forgetting what this place was to her.

“Turn the car around, Alexi. Right now.” Her voice shakes, rage and sorrow consuming her in equal measure.

“I cannot do that.” I cut the engine and turn to face her.

Her hardened glare meets mine, and I watch as the walls she has built around her break, the structure cracking more and more with each minute we sit here.

Her head falls to her hands as she begins to sob. When I reach for her, she shoves me away. I expected as much though.

“Why in the ever-loving fuck did you think it was okay to bring me back to the place where I watched my parents being murdered?”

Evie’s fist swings out, connecting with my shoulder, causing me to grunt in pain.

Damn, she is strong.

“What makes you think I ever wanted to see this place again?”

Her fists clench and unclench, ready to hit me again. However, I know my girl better than I know myself.

“Princess, listen to me.”

She shakes her head, her bottom lip quivering.

“I brought you here because I want a life with you that has no limits,” I explain gently, trying to make her see that my intentions were only to help, not hurt her. This time when I reach for her hands, she allows me to take them.

“I brought you here because I talked to Dr. K about the best way for us to grow together. I want us to start our marriage with a clean slate, without pain or resentment holding us back. Princess, I brought you here to say goodbye.”

Her confused eyes meet mine.

“The right way.”

I watch her shoulders sag at the same time as her jaw clenches tight. She is scared but strong. I will walk her through this one; she does not need to do it alone.
