“I can’t.”

“You like working here. And you’re pretty.” He reaches for my breasts when suddenly he’s lifted up into the air and flies backward, slamming into his office.

My mouth falls open.

Mercer stands there. All in black, looking like he could kill. The savagery on his face makes my knees go weak. It takes me a few seconds to find words.

“What…what are you doing here?”

“I came to see how things were going.” He walks past me and takes one step toward Bob, who’s grumbling on the floor behind me. “You’re lucky Ivy doesn’t press charges for sexual harassment. You’re even luckier I didn’t kill you for touching her. She’s done with this place. I’ll be back tomorrow to pick up two weeks’ severance plus tips. And trust me when I say I know how much the staff makes in places like this. Make the payout good or you’ll wish I ended you tonight.”

With that, he grabs me and hauls me past tables to the back where the bathrooms are. He pushes me into the biggest stall and locks the door.

I pull free but he stops me from opening the stall door. I ball my fingers into tight fists. “Let me out.”

“Not on your fucking life.”

“You just got me fired.”

He laughs. “I quit for you. He’s lucky I didn’t kill him. Does he do that all the fucking time?”

“Not if you don’t let him near you. I need this job.”

But it’s like he doesn’t hear me.

“Why the fuck are you working somewhere like this, Ivy?”

“You don’t even like me,” I say, head spinning. “So why do you even care?”

“I don’t care. But while you’re with me, you’re mine. And I don’t fucking share.”

Anger bubbles up in my chest. I shove him. “You think this is all right? You think coming in earlier to spy on me was okay? And threatening my boss?—”

“I wasn’t here earlier,” he says. “And it’s your ex-boss. You just quit.”

“No.” I poke him in the chest. “You quit for me.”

“You want that cretin all over you? Is that what gets you hot, Pollyanna?”

“Shut up! You’re just as bad as him.”

“Maybe I fucking am, but the difference is that you wantme.”

The fury pounds in my veins. “No, I don’t.”

“Lies.” He laughs and this is the real Mercer, not that man from this morning. This animalistic, elemental, savage man is Mercer Vale. Dark, twisted with a carnal quality that calls to me like the forbidden fruit I know I shouldn’t eat, but that my mouth waters for. He’s pure alpha and he knows it.

And of course, he knows I’m lying.

“Let me out of here.”

“No. Seems like you need a lesson about your place, Pollyanna.”

His whiskey eyes lock on mine, and it’s a frisson of electricity that hits me, right between my legs, deep inside my core.

“Let. Me. Out.”

“On your knees, slut.”
