“Ginger being there is putting everyone’s life in danger, Samara, even yours. It’s too risky, and I don’t want you—”

“Let me make something clear to you, Phantom.” I turned my attention away from the road to find her sharply glaring daggers at me. “What happened between us changesnothingas far as whatever control you think you have over me. I care about you, too, but when it comes to Ginger,DO. NOT. FUCK. WITH. ME.”

Every crease of her face didn’t belie how serious she was, and that she’d in fact stab or shoot me if I didn’t bring her with me. I needed to confront my father, but I didn’t want her there when shit went down again. I had a feeling she hadn’t opened the envelope. If she had, then I figured she would’ve brought it up by now.

Or maybe she isn’t ready to talk about it, my inner thoughts said to me.Discovering you’re the blood-born heir to the Ravager throne was quite a fucked-up pill to swallow.

“Fine,” I indignantly agreed, which spread a pleased smile across her plump lips. “But when I say it’s time to go, we’re leaving.”

She snorted at me and then whipped around in her seat to glare out the windshield again. “Whatever, Phantom. Let’s just hurry the hell up and get there.”

We rode the rest of the way in silence, and I swore softly as I pulled into the driveway and parked, my eyes sweeping over the damage that would indubitably cost more money than I had stashed away to fix.

Fuck.

“No offense,” Samara said as she unlocked her door and opened it, staring back at me before she got out. “But you need to find healthier ways to deal with your anger. That shit right there was unnecessary. You could’ve killed yourself.”

She said nothing more and jumped out, not sparing me another glance as she shut the door and trekked toward the house, wincing a little with every other step.

The darkness in me wanted to smile but couldn’t thanks to these goddamn tears filling my eyes.

Her words… Fuck.

She sounded just like Cindy.

She would’ve loved Samara. I fuckinghatethat they never got the chance to meet.

She’s gone.

My best friend is gone.

Hastily wiping under my eyes, I stepped out of Rhett’s car and took extra care to shut the door gently this time around, entering the house a moment later to find Samara nowhere in sight. Chatter filled the air the closer I came to the basement.

Everyone in the room except Samara shot me ruthless glares when I entered.

Ginger wasn’t here, which meant she must’ve dismissed herself for the night. Someone I didn’t expect to see was here though. Jace. He was standing next to Father, holding onto Samara for dear life and kissing her deeply with his eyes open and locked fiercely on me.

“Wh-what are you doing here?” Samara spoke, addressing Jace as she pulled away and cupped his thin cheeks, pressing their foreheads together.

“The moment I told you about Cindy, I knew you’d do something rash. I was halfway to the academy when Rhett called and told me what happened.”

“How did you know to come here though?”

“We tracked my GPS,” Rhett, who was pouring himself a drink at the bar, answered. “He was about ten minutes out from Cindy’s shop until we got a notification saying you two were on the move again. We saw you were headed here, so I called him back and told him to come here.”

“Excuse the interruption,” Father butted in, his unhinged pupils locked on me and only me. “Now that everyone is back and safe, I need to have a word with my son.Privately.”

“Where’s Ginger?” Samara asked him. “Is she still here?”

“Yes,” Father responded at the same time Jace’swhat the fuckcomment sailed through the air. “She should be upstairs. Make it quick. This won’t take long.”

“You’re right,” I finally replied as Samara and Jace raced like bullets out of the room, my jaw ticking as I surveyed him with an icy onceover. “This won’t take long at all.”

“You deserve to have your fucking teeth kicked in,” Isaac spat as he stormed past me, freezing in the doorway long enough to glare back at Rhett. “I’ll be in the car.”

Rhett’s gaze shook as he volleyed between me and father. He hesitated a moment, looking torn, like he was scared of what might happen once Father and I were alone. Rhett had nothing to worry about. What Father had coming was far worse than any pain I could physically inflict.

“Ye-yeah,” he whispered. “Right behind you.”
