“Did he hurt you?”

I shook my head. “No. I’m okay.”

“Good. I’m glad you’re still here. I wanted to talk to you about something.”

“Is it about Brian?”

Rhett’s jaw ticked at the mention of his name. “He’s… not important right now. However, I do agree with the weapons thing. Should you do the honors, or should I?”

When I didn’t speak, he advanced closer to me.

“I’m not armed,” I lied, steering back a few steps so he couldn’t grab ahold of me.

He cocked that handsome head of his to the side, offering me a smirk. “Yeah, and I’m Mary fucking Poppins.”

“Okay,fine.”

I lifted my hoodie and shirt about halfway, openly exposing the blades inside the belt strapped to my slim waist, proving him right. There were also more blades around my ankles, plus two extra clips fully stocked with bullets hidden in my bra. I hid my spare gun behind one of the tree stumps when most of the recruits had cleared out and nobody was paying attention enough to catch me in the act. He wouldn’t know about those if I could help it.

“Satisfied?”

He nodded, slowly dragging his teeth along his bottom lip, and goddamnit if my pussy didn’t throb in rhythm with my heart when he wet his lips with his tongue. He was looking at me like he was ready to crack my legs open wide and devour me like a dinner buffet.

It's not the worst idea….

No. Hell no. Don’t go there, Samara.

But if it’ll help you get your hands on those keys…

No, goddamnit, NO! I’d find another way.

“So,” I said, clearing my throat as I readjusted my clothes, cloaking the weapons from his roaming eyes. “What did you want to talk to me about?”

Rhett wordlessly nudged his head near the tree stumps, motioning with his hand for me to follow. My gun was hidden behind the biggest of the three, but luckily Rhett plopped down on the smallest one. I took claim of the larger one and scooted around to face him, pleased to catch a side-eye view of the weapon resting right where I left it.

“I’m breaking a lot of rules here,” he started, licking his lips again. “So, just keep this between us, okay?”

“Okay?” I repeated with confusion. “What is it?”

“It’s about your trial. I’m sure you caught on to the hint I gave everyone, right?”

I nodded. “Whatever we’re doing involves water.”

“It does.” Rhett scraped a palm across his sharp jaw and blew out a nervous breath. “Listen, Samara. The trials are brutal. Dangerous. I can’t apologize enough for dragging you into this shit. I should’ve talked to you about it first.”

“You’ve already apologized,” I replied, unsure why he was doing this when we’d already had this conversation. “What’s done is done. I’ve forgiven you for it.”

“I know that, but it doesn’t change the fact I let my personal feelings for you fog my perception.”

My brows knitted together.Personal feelings? What the hell was he talking about?

“Anyway,” he continued, “with that being said, the first trial will take place here at the academy, at the pool. I can’t tell you what’s gonna happen, but what Icantell you is that you have one week to learn how to swim. If you can’t figure out how to at least dive in the water and get yourself back to the surface, you’ll die.”

My heart sank, my guts twisting. This was not good. This was not good at all.

“Wh-why are you telling me this? I-I mean, I appreciate the heads up, but why would you—"

“Because it’s my fault you’re in this mess, and I won’t be able to live with myself if you die trying to complete these trials.People. Will. Die. Samara.Get that wired into your brain right now. I don’t give two fucks less about the others, butyou…” He paused for a long moment, his throat bobbing as he stared deeply, sensually into my eyes. “You, I care about. I-I don’t want to lose you.”
