“Hey,” I answered. “Where are you?”

“Sa-Samara,” her broken voice echoed through the line.

“What’s wrong? Where are you?”

“I-I’m still at the dorm. It-It’s Brian, Samara. The police are here. They want to talk to us.”

My lips parted in a gasp, my heart sinking deep in the pit of my stomach. “I’ll be there soon.”

“Hang on a second.” Kinsley turned back to her gym bag and reached inside, pulling out a little notepad and pen. After scribbling something down, she ripped off the page, then raced around the pool to deliver it to me.

“This is my number. Like I said, you don’t have a lot of time. If you want my help, text me. If not, that’s on you.”

And then she dove into the pool, splashing water all over me.

I MADE IT BACK TO THE dorm and opened the door, finding two cops who’ve obviously eaten their fair share of donuts over the years, standing in the middle of the living room. Sky was sitting on the couch. Tears puddled down her swollen cheeks.

“Samara.” She launched herself off the couch to get to me. “It’s bad. It’s really bad.”

“What’s this about?” I asked, snapping my gaze over to the officers while I held Sky in my arms. My entire body couldn’t help but coil with tension in their presence. I fucking hated cops.

“We’re here about Brian Barlowe,” the overweight one with a bald head and overly grown mustache spoke first.

I eyed over his badge.Scott. Officer Scott from Storm Ridge PD.

“I’m sorry to inform you that he’s been reported missing by his parents.”

My eyes widened. “Missing?” I dumbly repeated. “What do you mean he’s missing?”

I released Sky and followed her as she grabbed ahold of my hand and led me to the couch. We sat down, waiting.

“We received a phone call from Mrs. Barlowe at around 9AM this morning. She said she received a phone call from a…” He paused long enough to gape down at the pad he was holding. “Headmaster Higgins. He called and reported that Brian hadn’t been coming to his classes for over a week.”

My breath hitched. Sky’s body shook the more she cried.

“His car isn’t on campus and his phone is off. According to Brian’s mother, Sky Parker is his girlfriend. We’re hoping she may know his whereabouts.”

“I-I don’t know where he is,” Sky answered. “We-we broke up.”

The other cop who’d been silent grunted and pulled out his pad, jotting down something neither me nor Sky could see. “And when did this happen?” he asked.

“Last week, maybe? I haven’t seen or talked to him since then.”

“And what was the cause of the breakup?”

Sky shot him a bewildered look. “We-we had a fight. He punched me in the face and then I left him.”

“He hit you?” asked Officer Scott, his brows furrowing. “Why?”

“I’m sorry,” I had to interrupt. “But why does that matter? He hit her and she left. Neither of us has seen or talked to him since then, and that’s the truth.”

“Forgive us. We’re only asking because it’s important we understand the events that took place and the mindset he was in before he disappeared.”

“Oh my God.” Sky clung herself to me, shaking impossibly harder. “You-you don’t think he—”

“That’s not what we’re implying here. However, anything is possible.”

“He was cheating on me,” Sky muttered, reaching up to swipe away the wetness glued to her cheeks. “He’d been acting weird. Being secretive, cruel, and mean to me for nothing. I-I got suspicious, so I went through his phone. That’s how I found out. We got in a huge fight over it, and it ended with him hitting me.”
