Hence the reason why Rhett warned you about it,my subconscious reminded me.

With a slight lift of my shoulders, I annoyingly threw up my hands and began stripping out of my clothes until I was wearing nothing except the bathing suit Sky loaned me.

Nodding approvingly, Kinsley threw up her hair then stripped out of the clothing hiding her ugly bikini.

I wriggled my nose at the color. She’d chosen pink this time.

Kinsley took off towards the pool, near the ladder on the shallow end. When she was in the water, she stood off to the side, then motioned for me to follow her lead.

“First things first,” she said as I hesitantly took a step towards the ladder, both hands pressed firmly to her hips, a stern glare on her face. “Don’t be afraid of the water. A lot of people put off learning how to do this shit strictly because of that fact alone.”

It wasn’t that I was entirely scared of the water. That wasn’t the problem. As long as it didn’t stray past my waist and my feet could touch the ground, I was fine. Getting me to stray closer to the deep end, however…

Yeah…

I didn’t foresee this being a pleasant experience for either of us.

“Do you at least know how to float?” she asked when I slipped in beside her, my body shivering from the cold.

“Ye-yeah,” was my tentative response. “On my back, I can. That’s literally all the experience I have when it comes to swimming.”

Kinsley nodded favorably to that, almost looking a little impressed. “Well, if you can do that, then you can tread water. All it takes is practice and patience.”

I SCREAMED UNDERWATER as my body sank, my lungs burning for oxygen the harder my arms thrashed, desperate to get back to the top. I made it halfway to the bottom and was about to succumb when finally, Kinsley’s arms swooped around me, and she drifted me back to the surface.

My head emerged above water, and I frantically coughed, clinging tighter to Kinsley as she led me to the shallow end.

“For fuck’s sake, Samara,” she growled, obviously agitated with me.

I didn’t blame her for it either. This was, what, the tenth time she had to dive in and save me from drowning?

“How many times do I have to say it? Stop freaking the fuck out and flailing your arms trying to scratch through the water. Cup your palms and push down like you’re trying to lift yourself up. What’s so fucking hard about that?”

We made it to the ladder, and I wasted no time climbing up it, my chest still heaving. Kinsley got out next and offered me another nasty glower after I’d finished wiping the water off my face.

“Not trying to be a bitch here, but I can’t help you if you won’t listen to me. You have to remaincalm, Samara. The more you panic, the lower you sink. It’s that simple.”

“I’m done for.” Tears filled my already wet eyes, slipping out of the corners. “I’m not gonna make it. I’m gonna die.”

Kinsley rolled her eyes at me. “With that attitude, yeah, you will.”

“Oh, fuck you, Kinsley,” I lashed out, my eyes narrowed. “Things may come easy to you, but it’s not always like that for everyone else. Thanks for the help, but this was a waste of time. I’m going back to my dorm.”

“So that’s it?” she scoffed as I began to walk off. “You’re giving up?”

“What other choice do I have?” I stopped and whipped around to face her. “Rhett told me if I can’t figure out how to swim from the bottom to the top, then I’m dead. It’s obvious I can’t do it, so—”

“Wait, what? When did this happen?”

“At the meeting,” I answered. “He knew I couldn’t swim. When the meeting was over, he told me what I had to do.”

“Whatelsedid he tell you?” she asked, her anger gone, her brows now pinched with curiosity. “Did he tell you what we’re doing?”

I shook my head. “No. He didn’t. What I just told you is basically everything he said to me. He was warning me.”

“From the bottom to the top…”

Kinsley repeated those words for a long moment. She spun on her heel and slightly cocked her head at the pool, chewing anxiously on her lip.
