“Where do you think they’re taking him?”

“I don’t know,” was Kinsley’s nervous, blunt response. “The Ravagers are scary good at what they do. More than likely, they’ll cover it up and say it was an accidental drowning. That he snuck out and was found floating face down in the lake or something.”

It wasn’t as crazy as it sounded, and that wasn’t the first time I’d heard how dangerously good the Ravagers were at covering their asses. What happened to Brian was a fine fucking example of that.

“Okay, ladies, line the fuck up!”

Phantom and Rhett held their positions while Isaac stalked toward us, the air growing thicker with apprehension as his lips spread wide in a devilish grin.

“Well, would you look at that,” he said again, his brows lifting as if he were somewhat impressed. “Everyone is already standing next to their partners.”

I was at the end of the line, closest to the door. The only person standing next to me was on my left and that was…Kinsley.

“Looks like it’s your lucky day,” she chuckled in a whisper, and my hand unconsciously grasped hers, squeezing it as a means to express my relief.

Breathe, Samara. Breathe. Everything is gonna be okay.

I settled the tremor in my core and stood straighter, listening as Isaac began calling out our names five at a time.

“Amber, Richelle, Janice, Katy, and Kinsley,” he fired off in sequence. “Get ready. You’re going in the water.”

“Wh-what?” Kinsley screeched as the other girls broke down sobbing, her big eyes wide with terror as they frantically volleyed between me and Isaac, gaping open-mouthed and stunned while Isaac continued to wickedly grin between us.

The overworked muscle barricaded under my ribs jolted even harder when the three remaining guards dispersed from the door and wandered over to the chains and locks that I hadn’t noticed was in separate piles spread alongside the deepest end of the pool. The heavy, circular weights were planted beside them.

“No,” I challenged, and for a moment there I hadn’t comprehended what I was doing or why I was doing it until Kinsley grabbed ahold of my arm and squeezed it out of encouragement. “Kinsley swims. I’ll go in the water.”

“Sorry, Samurai. This order is non-negotiable.”

Kinsley and I protested, fumbling on our words as Phantom hollered in a feral command for everyone to get in position.

“Samara.” Tears slid down Kinsley’s pale cheeks as she turned to face me, her body quivering. “Please don’t let me die.”

Isaac stormed toward her and forcibly snatched her up by the arm, literally dragging her away from me as she fought against him.

We were screwed. There was no way in hell I could get her out in time before she drowned. Kinsley knew it, too.

I can’t do this.

Breathe, Samara. Just breathe.

I can’t fucking do this!

You have to! Just fucking breathe, Samara!

Theclinkingandclankingof the chains made me want to vomit. I looked away, unable to take in a mere glimpse of Kinsley, or any of the girls, being shackled like a bunch of inmates about to be sent to their execution.

That was when I sawthemapproaching me. Phantom and Rhett. Every muscle attached to my bones became rigid when Phantom’s large hands unexpectedly traced up my arms and clasped around my bare shoulders.

“You can do this,” came his deep voice, and I was frankly amazed at my level of physical restraint. I wanted to fuckingstabhim—all of them—for putting me and all these innocent lives through this shit, especially after what Kinsley did to me.

“What happens to me if she dies?”

“That’ll be up to Father,” was Rhett’s soft response. Phantom stepped back so Rhett could approach me. In his hand was a set of lockbox keys.

My heart jackhammered. There had to be at least twenty of them attached to the ring.

“Don’t overthink it. All you have to do is get her out.”
