Kinsley jerked again and reflexively flailed her arms. Then when her eyes fluttered again, they shut, and I knew I was out of time.

FUCK!

I drifted my weight down to the floor and kicked off again, coming up long enough to take in the last good breath I had left to salvage.

When I made it back down, I started with the lock around Kinsley’s ankle. The seconds kept on ticking and Kinsley wasn’t moving. Dread ran through me at the thought of her being dead. Of me not being able to move fast enough to get her out.

Fucking finally.

I got the lock off her left ankle, freeing her leg. As I moved on to the other, I started back through the keys again, crying out underwater when the first fucking key unlocked the clip.

As fast as fucking possible, I grabbed ahold of her legs and kicked off the floor for the third and final fucking time, barely getting far before the goddamn extra weight from the chains began dragging us back down.

No! No!

KINSLEY!

Thirty

Phantom

IstartedcompressionsagainstSamara’s chest as Rhett got to work reviving Kinsley, breathing into her mouth hard before repeating the process a second time.

Not again.

Please, God. Not again.

“Come on,” I demanded in a feral growl, my heart sinking. “Don’t do this to me again. I’m sorry, Samara. Fuck, I’m so fucking sorry!”

I was practically beating her chest at this point. This was all my fucking fault. They’d been under far too long. It took Rhett and Isaac screaming and threatening to shoot me before my restraint finally snapped, and I had to dive in there and drag them out.

We killed her.

We fucking killed her.

Isaac shoved me out of the way and continued administering CPR as I sat there grasping my head, my chest heaving harder the more the harrowing screams from the other recruits continued to rip through time and space.

A strangled cough had my head jerking towards Rhett, who was helping Kinsley sit up as she struggled to rid the water out of her lungs.

“Sa-Samara,” she croaked, her jaw quivering. “No! No!”

She practically slapped Rhett across his face and lunged to Samara’s side, administering mouth to mouth like the icy bitch hadn’t just escaped death’s cruel grasp. Isaac desperately continued compressions. His face was red, eyes swelling wider with tears.

“SAMURAI!” he growled.

Rhett knocked Kinsley out of the way and planted his mouth against Samara’s, delivering one hard breath that had Samara’s body convulsing forward, spewing water every-fucking-where.

Kinsley let out a cry and reached out to hold Samara tightly against her, which had everyone, even me and Isaac stuck in awhat the fuck was happening right nowdaze.

“Did we pass?” Samara's weak voice rasped out.

Kinsley's frantic gaze slid up and darted between me, Rhett, and Isaac, who shook his head when their eyes locked. "No. Technically, you failed."

"However," Rhett rushed to add. "We broke the rules by interfering."

"Wait," Kinsley muttered, a hopeful look flashing in her eyes. "Does that mean we're still moving forward?"

“Yes,” Isaac replied. “You're both safe.”
