“Wait, what?” I took my eyes off the road to look at him again. “What are you talking about?”

“Don’t tell me you forgot about theexpansion.”

I ground my teeth as I turned away, cursing to myself.Damnit, that’s right. The phone call Finn overheard. His theory about the illegal whore house.

“And you really think that—”

“Think about it, Jace. If he and the other lords really are planning what I think they’re planning, then that estate is the perfect spot for them to pull it off, if they haven’t already. Neither one of us knew anything about Damien having access to it, not until now. Not until Cindy got caught. Why do you think that is?”

My stomach clenched at the prospect, and I shivered, swallowing back the nausea assaulting my taste buds. I didn’t want to think aboutthat. Not with us being elbow deep in the shit we were already fretting over now with Cindy.

“I guess it really doesn’t matter, does it?” It disgusted me to say it, but regardless of what Father did or didn’t do with the place, it was like Finn said—there wasn’t jack-shit we could do about it. Any of it. We still had orders we were expected to follow.

Either way, Finn was right.

Either way, we were fucked.

We eventually reached the end of the final mile and just as I activated my blinker, the familiar front end of a limousine appeared in the rearview mirror and was coming inhot.

Fuck. Looked like Father didn’t take the extra time to bullshit with the Bling brothers like I expected.

I pulled into the long, concrete driveway and sighed as I parked. Finn and I shared a frown before twisting around to check on Cindy.

She still hadn’t woken up, and if I was being painstakingly frank, there was a tiny spark of hope inside me that prayed she wouldn’t. I know it was a cruel and inhumane thing to say given our scenario. I’d never wish such a fate on someone who didn’t genuinely deserve it. The sad, brutal truth of it though, was that mine, Finn, and possibly Ginger’s fate too, rested in Cindy’s hands. If my father succeeded and broke her, we’d all die.

But if she died first…

If she were dead before Father could get his hands on her again…

Fuck.

I couldn’t believe I was actually contemplating this.

“Finn,” I faintly whispered, my hands shaking, starting to sweat the longer I gaped guiltily down at Cindy’s unconscious form. “There’s another way.”

“What?”

“She can’t give us up if she’s already dead.”

I whispered it only so he could hear, just in case Cindy had miraculously gained enough consciousness to hear me. Finn’s eyes were wide when my stiff gaze darted over to him.

“You know I’m right. It’s theonlyway.”

Finn chewed nervously on his bottom lip, looking torn as he thought it over. “Fuck.” He sucked in a breath, his frown deepening as he shook his head. “I hear you, okay?”

He hastily wiped away the tears refilling his eyes. He then drew in another deep breath so he could pull himself together.

“Just… Just give me a minute to think this through.”

He waited way too fucking long to give me a direct answer, because Gregory, Father’s limousine driver, was carefully easing into the driveway.

My heart painfully jolted when he parked beside us and hopped out of the car to open Father’s back door. With the time it’d taken him just to get up the driveway, the job could’ve already been done.

Another apology flashed in Finn’s eyes, feathering off his lips as he opened his door and got out, slamming it shut. I scoffed, then planted my feet on the ground as he opened the back to retrieve Cindy.

He threw her over his shoulder and shut the door. As I rounded to his side, masking my grief, we both turned to face my father, who stood before us with his hands behind his back, offering us one of his famous demented smiles.

“Been a long time, hasn’t it, Jace?” he said to me. “Recognize the place?”
