The elevator opened and as I stepped out, approaching my room, I stopped, dropping my bags so I could fetch my key. After unlocking the door, I pushed it open. My body froze mid step when I looked up and found Sky in the living room, reaching down to haul up a large box from off the couch.

“Sky?”

She froze, her shoulders and back muscles constricting like I’d spooked her. “Oh,” she said distastefully, keeping her back to me. “You’re here.”

I blinked again, still taken aback that she was actually here. Better yet…Whyis she here? It hadn’t been two weeks since Brian, her asshole boyfriend, turned her against me. While Sky was gone on her little mental sabbatical, Brian came by the dorm, drunk off his ass, and tried to kiss me. I slapped him, and he begged me not to tell Sky. I should’ve, but I didn’t. I just let it go and pretended like it had never happened. In result, Brian showed up the day after Sky returned and told her what happened. Only he blamed me and said it was I who came onto him, which we all know is complete bullshit.

Long story short, Sky took that sorry piece of shit’s side over mine and kicked me to the curb.

“What’s going on?” I asked as I grabbed my bags and dropped them by the door, taking notice of the three other boxes spread along the couch.

Wait…Is she moving back in?

“Brian and I had a fight. I didn’t have anywhere else to go. So, yeah. Here I am.”

That was all the explanation I got before she turned and walked away. I was right behind her, catching the side of her bedroom door with my hand as she went to slam it in my face.

“Afight?” I watched in the doorway as she continued toward her bed and dropped the box on top of it, her back still facing me. “What do you mean you got in a fight?”

She shook her head and continued to unpack, saying nothing.

“Sky—”

“There’s nothing to talk about, Samara.” She breathed in deeply, her voice cracking. “Just go back to your side of the dorm and leave me alone.”

I stepped deeper into the room and rounded the bed so that I could get a better look at her. Sky kept her head down, protesting to spare me a glance as she continued to fumble through the box.

“Did he hurt you?” I asked, although I already knew the answer based solely on her behavior. All I was waiting for now was to see the evidence. I bet a hundred bucks she was wearing it on her face. If not there, then it was somewhere hidden underneath her clothes.

Sky remained wordless and turned, her back still facing me as she shuffled over to her dresser and deposited some clothes in the top drawer. When she spun around, I was right there, having snuck up behind her while her guard was down.

She shrieked, and as she jerked away from me, I grabbed ahold of her face, forcing her to look at me.

And there it was, just like I suspected. A nice black shiner wrapped perfectly around her left eye.

Sky must’ve sensed my next intent, because no sooner than I unhanded her, she was racing behind me, crying out for me to stop.

“Fuck.Him!” I fetched my shoes and began slipping them on. “That man just signed his goddamn death certificate.”

“Samara, stop! PLEASE!”

I glanced up and over to the door. Sky was there, trying to block me from leaving.

“How long has this been going on?”

Sky shook her head, then slid down the door until she was sitting, her knees to her chest. After heaving in a few breaths, I thought she’d speak, but she didn’t. She broke down like her heart had just been ripped out of her goddamn chest.

“This is the first time he’s ever hurt me,” she softly muttered.

I breathed in, relieved at the news, but still pissed it happened to begin with. I wanted nothing more than to hunt the fucker down and remove his intestines from his asshole. And I should. I really fucking should.

But… Sky needed me right now.

I still considered her my friend. This whole tiff was nothing more than a bullshit misunderstanding. She’d realize that soon enough if she hadn’t already. I even had proof to back it up. Not that I’d need it, but I’d use it if I had to.

Silence filled the room for a long moment. After taking another minute to fully reverse my killer antics, I approached Sky, then sat down in front of her, crisscrossing my legs. “What happened?”

“Honestly,” she whispered, swallowing hard as her wet eyes stared up at me. “You did.”
