He sighed deeply and approached me, hugging me tight. I couldn’t lie—to be a gay man, Smoke was undeniably handsome. He towered over me by a good six inches, had dark brown hair, and a set of emerald eyes that would make plenty of women weak in the knees at first sight. His jaw and cheekbones were sharply cut, and he had a full beard he kept trimmed to absolute perfection.

“Everything is going to be okay,” he said as he pulled away, swiping away the tears rolling down my cheeks. “Have a little faith.”

I snorted, shaking my head as I stalked over to the dresser to grab some socks and my shoes resting beside it. “Let’s just get this shit over with already.”

Smoke straightened his spine then and was by my side no sooner than I stood, his hand wrapped gently around my forearm. He led me out of the room and down the grand staircase. As I looked around Lena’s exquisite mansion, I couldn’t help but ask, “Where is the backstabbing bitch, anyway?”

“Sleeping,” Smoke replied. “She told me not to wake her. As soon as we’re done with the doctor, I’m taking you to get something to eat. After that, we’re coming back.”

I frowned at that. “Smoke… You don’t have to do this. Please, just let me—”

“I wish I could,” he murmured softly, shaking his head. “But I can’t. I am bound to Lena, who is bound to Damien. She is my boss, and he is hers, which technically makes him my boss, too. If I let you go—”

“Yeah, yeah, I get it,” I sneered as we walked out the door. “We both die.”

He led me to a blacked-out SUV, fucking typical, and politely opened the passenger side door for me. When he got behind the wheel, he had the engine started in no time, pulling out the driveway faster than I could rush to put my seatbelt on.

“I’m not gay, by the way.”

“What?”

Smoke released a dark chuckle and kept his eyes on the road. “I’m not gay. I only told Lena I was just so she’d stop trying to fuck me.”

“And you’re telling me this, why?” I asked, blinking incredulously at him.

“Because you and I are going to be spending a lot of time together throughout your pregnancy. I’d rather you know the truth instead of being forced to believe a lie.”

“Oh.” I suppose that was fair, albeit I really didn’t care. “Well, okay then.”

He continued to stare ahead as he smiled, leaving it at that. About ten minutes later we pulled up to the OBGYN clinic. Other than the place looking brand new, the parking lot was deserted.

“Why—”

“You can thank Lena, and that’s all I’m going to say about it.”

I huffed and opened the door, unable to fully get it shut before Smoke rushed out and was back at my side with his hand locked securely around my arm. As we approached the door, it opened, revealing a woman wearing royal blue scrubs, a bright smile on her face.

“Ginger?”

“That’s me,” I said dully.

“Right this way.”

Smoke let go of my arm when we entered, and obediently I followed the woman through the office door and cleared two halls before she finally paused outside of an ultrasound room.

“Have a seat in one of these chairs,” she said, gesturing to her right. “I’ll be right out to get your blood pressure, weight, and take some blood.”

“Great,” I whispered, rolling my eyes as I sat down, crossing my arms. “Can’t wait.”

“Are you not excited?” Smoke asked me, looking confused as he planted himself beside me. “I mean… you’re having a baby. I’d giveanythingto have a child.”

“Wait… what?” My brows furrowed. “You can’t have kids?”

He shook his head, his lips tilting down into a heavy frown. “No. A few years ago, I was head over heels in love with someone I thought I was going to marry. We tried for over a year to get pregnant, but it never happened. We thought it was her, so we tried IVF as a last resort. It turned out it wasn’t her at all. It was me. I’m sterile. She left me because of it.”

My lips parted. “Oh… I’m so sorry.”

Smoke shrugged like it honestly wasn’t a big deal. “It is what it is. I’ve accepted it.”
