This was all one huge fucking reality of nightmares. But I will admit what Kitten was saying did make sense. I wouldn’t dare fault her decision because if the roles were reversed, I’d have thought and acted just the same.

“Finn warned me Damien knew about him,” I admitted. “After our last conversation, I figured you might’ve been right about him and Ginger leaving together, so I went by Finn’s place to see if anything was missing. I found an answering machine with a message from Finn on it. It was under his bed. There was nothing I could do at that point. He’d been taken long before I found it.”

Samara gushed out an aggravated growl and furiously shook her head against my chest.

Now came the hard part. I’d contemplated whether bringing it up was a good idea given everything that’s happened, but I also didn’t want to lie to her either. Her trust and love were the two most precious things she’d ever given me. I couldn’t lose that.

Not overthis.

“He revealed something to me in that message, Samara. Something that involves you. I have the machine if you’d like to hear it for yourself. It’s on the top shelf in my closet.”

She bristled. “Wh-what is it?” Finally, she gently lifted herself and locked eyes with me, brushing her mildly damp hair away from her face. “What did he say?”

“He said he was your cousin. Your blood cousin. And that Xavier Michaelson was—”

“Heknew?” Samara suddenly erupted; her bruised face twisted with fury. “Finn knew this whole fucking time?”

“Wait…what?” I blinked at her, completely flabbergasted by her reaction, and sat up in bed. “You knew about this and didn’t tell me? What the hell, Kitten?”

Samara opened and closed her mouth then, sighing. “I literally just found out. Jerimiah Sinclair and his daughter, Kinsley, told me.”

Now I was even more fucking confused. “When did you meet with Jerimiah Sinclair?”

“Two days ago. First thing Thursday morning.”

I listened patiently as she explained everything. A solid five minutes had passed before finally she drew in a deep breath and blew it out, frowning at me with tears in her eyes.

This was a lot to process.

But at the same time… Everything was suddenly starting to make a lot of fucking sense.

“Are you okay?”

I winced.

Of course, she wasn’t okay. How could you ask such a stupid fucking question?

“I mean, how are you coping with all of it?”

Kitten sat up straighter, mute at first. Eventually, she shook her head and said, “I’m angry. In some ways I understand, but then again, I don’t.”

“Do they know? Rhett, Isaac, and Phantom?”

She shrugged, looking uncertain. “I don’t think so. Jerimiah told me my father was already using Xavier’s alias before Rhett and the others came along.”

“Oh god, Kitten.” Suddenly there was a foul taste in my mouth. “You-you slept with your stepbrothers...”

“I’m aware,” she growled, pinning me with an acidic glare. “But onlyoneof them is my real stepbrother, and that’s Rhett. My father actually adopted him. He didn’t adopt Phantom and Isaac.” She froze then, appearing even more unsure of herself the longer she pondered on it. “Or at least I don’t think he did.”

“And you’re okay with that?” I asked, unable to do anything but stare incredulously at her.

“I kind of have to be. It’s not like I can reverse time and unfuck them.” She looked away from me, the sadness in her eyes making my already shattered heart jump painfully hard in my chest. “Besides, none of that even matters right now, Jace. It’smyproblem thatIwill handle on my own time. WhenI’mready.”

I reached for her hand, squeezing it. “I’m sorry, Kitten. I wasn’t trying to—”

“It’s not you I’m mad with.” She knuckled under her eyes, sniffling. “It’s Xavier, and worst of all, Damien. I know what he’s planning, Jace, and we have to stop him. He has to pay for everything he’s done not only to me, but to all of us. He’s waiting until I pass my third trial to attack.”

“He told you this?” If I sounded stunned and maybe a little pissed off, it’s because I was. Fatherpromisedhe’d fill me in on what his so-called plans were, and the bastard never upheld his end of the deal. The only thing he said to me was that from now on, the club was my responsibility, and then he ran off stating he had another appointment he couldn’t miss. I suppose leaving me in the dark was payback for me kicking two of his now perfectly replaced teeth out. It was either that, or he neglected to tell me for one reason alone. He still didn’t trust me.
