Phantom nodded to that, still refusing to look at me. “But you told her, right? You told her everything that bastard did to our girl?”

“She knows,” I said softly.

Phantom cursed, fighting like hell not to fucking cry.

“We need to talk, brother.”

“About what?” his voice shook.

“About Father being Samara’s birth father.”

His head shot up then and his eyes locked with mine, panic flashing across his dark, wet pupils.

That’s right.

I knew.

After Phantom callously lashed out at Father when we were visiting Griffin, I’d kissed my cousin’s forehead and decided to wander off and listen in, discovering a truth I never in a million fucking years thought would’ve been true.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, my eyes glistening with unshed tears.

Phantom sighed and then deposited both icepacks he was using on the kitchen counter, turning to me as I approached him. Face to fucking face.

“I didn’t know how to.” He kept his voice level and low, glancing over my shoulder towards his shared bedroom like he was afraid Isaac would hear us. “Father was supposed to tell you and Isaac days ago, but he’s been putting it off because he’s scared of how you’ll react…YouandSamara, especially. Iwantedto tell you, Rhett, but it’s notmeyou should be hearing this from. It’s Father.”

It was all a lie…

Everything Father said to us was one huge fucking LIE.

And Samara… Fuck. She’d talked to me about this. Her suspicions. She put her trust in me and all I did was fill her head with the same deception Father planted into mine.

I just…

I couldn’t believe this was happening. That this wasreal. How did I fail to see what had been staring me right in the face?

“Does she know?” I asked, sniffling, struggling to control my anger.

“I didn’t have the balls to tell her.” Phantom paused, swallowing hard, his throat bobbing. “You have no idea how much this shit has been eating me up inside.”

Without thinking twice about it, I wrapped my arms around my brother, hugging him as tight as I could despite him bristling around my grip.

“I understand how you feel. If the roles were reversed, I’d have probably done the same thing.”

“It still doesn’t make it right,” he murmured.

“This isn’t your fault, Phantom.” I pulled away and locked eyes on his watery blues. “It’s Father’s.”

He looked away from me, nodding, though it was written clearly in his expression that my words bore him no realcomfort. He blamed himself. If I were in his shoes, I’d blame myself too.

And speaking of Father…

“Can I trust leaving you alone here with Isaac? There’s somewhere I need to be.”

“Rhett,” Phantom started, protesting.

“I heard the truth from you and now I need to hear it from him. I’ll fill him in on what went down tonight while I’m there. Again, can I trust leaving you alone here with Isaac?”

“No promises,” he grumbled.
