“I just need a little help standing up.” I hated asking because it made me feel weak, but I was in so much fucking pain and compared to Jace’s bed, the toilet sat a lot lower on the floor than I’d anticipated. I truly didn’t believe I could manage getting up without his assistance.

Jace nodded and within the span of a heartbeat, reached out and pulled me to my feet, frowning as I held back my cry and forced myself to breathe through the agony.

“Baby,” he started.

“I’m fine,” I half-ass lied, whimpering again as I pulled my underwear and shorts up. “So, you burned the toast, huh?”

His frown flattened to an annoyed, thin line. “I didn’t mean to,” he said thickly, “but yes.”

I couldn’t help but smile at him. “You cooked breakfast for me?”

“Forus,” he replied through a weak smile of his own. “It’s been a while since we’ve had a date. And since it’s not exactly safe for us to be together in public, I figured we could enjoy a nice breakfast together before you have to leave.”

My heart melted, my breath catching. “I-I’d love that. So much.”

Lacing his fingers through mine, he carefully led me out of his bedroom and to the kitchen where there was a large pan of bacon, eggs, and a pot of cheddar-cheese grits resting on the stove. Two pieces of awfully burnt toast were sticking out of thetoaster. I chuckled again as I stared up at him angrily eyeing the scorched bread like it'd committed some heinous crime.

“I’ll take some of everything…except the toast.”

“Orange juice?” he asked through a knowing smirk.

I nodded, grinning at him. “Orange juice.”

He pressed a sweet kiss to my forehead and squeezed my hand. As we parted ways, I carefully wandered over and sat down at hisbig enough for two peoplekitchen table, the tenderness in my ass making me wince a little.

“Aside from being sore, how are you feeling, baby?”

I sighed, my lungs aching. “I guess I’m okay. I-I mean… I have to be, right?”

“It’s okay tonotbe okay, Kitten. But if I’m being totally honest here, Ineedto know where your head is right now. Also… I told Rhett you’d be coming back this morning. Don’t be surprised if all three of them are waiting for you.”

“You-you talked to Rhett again?” I asked nervously, watching as he finished up with my plate. “When?”

Jace placed a fork on top of the plate and grabbed a few napkins before he brought the dish over and placed everything down in front of me. “Last night.” He walked off, grabbing a glass from the cabinet and opening the fridge, depositing my OJ on the table a moment later. “After you fell asleep.”

My breath hitched at his words.

It was quiet as Jace continued stacking his plate. He sat down, looking me dead in the eyes as he said, “I told him everything.”

“Jace…” My fork slipped from my fingers and fell on the plate, my lips parted. “Why?”

“Because I had to, baby.” He frowned at me.

“Did you tell him about Ginger?” I asked, my throat tight. “Does he know Xavier is my father?”

My heart sank when he nodded. “Like I said, I told himeverythingwe talked about.”

I pushed my plate away, suddenly not hungry anymore.

“Don’t do that.” Jace got to his feet, coming over and cradling my face in his hands. “Don’t you dare shut down on me.Not now.Not ever.”

“You don’t understand, Jace.” I grasped his wrists and stared straight into his eyes, down to his soul.

“I expressed to Rhett how dire the situation is and that until we have more info on that property and how many people are guarding it on the insideandoutside, there’s not shit they can do about it.”

“I’m not talking about the shit with Ginger.” She was the least of my worries at the moment. “I’m talking about Xavier. Why did you tell him?”

“We’re all on the same side, baby,” was his soft response. “Lying about it and hiding the truth will only inflict more harm than good. With Finn currently incapacitated until only God knows when, we all have to be kept in the loop and on the same page if we expect to win.”
