“Is a fucking dead man,” he dominantly growled.

“He knows who I am, which means he has to know Xavier’s true identity, too. As soon as I pass the trials, it’s game over, Rhett, for all of us.”

“Not necessarily,” he muttered, mildly stroking my battered cheek. “We know what he’s planning now. And Damien knows nothing about your phone being tapped, right?”

“That’s right,” I agreed.

“Then there you go. Worrying and stressing yourself out won’t do anything except make things harder on you. You’re not fighting this battle alone, baby, so instead of carrying all this heavy weight on your shoulders, pass it to me and my brothers. Letustote it so you can focus on healing.”

“I don’t deserve you.” I broke away from his comforting touch and shook my head. “I hurt you, Rhett. I-I was sent here to kill you. I-I was going to follow through.”

“The past is the past. That was then, and this is now. I—all of us—are madly in fucking love with you, Samara, and there’s nothing anyone can say or do to change that. You’re with us, right?”

“Of course, I am. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be. But I’m in love with Jace, too. I won’t leave him behind. I refuse.”

“I know you love him, which is why we’re going to do everything we can to get him out as safely as possible.”

“You promise?” I asked, my bottom lip trembling.

“I don’t make promises I can’t keep. But I will do everything in my power to ensure you two can and will be together again.”

He leaned in close, his lips brushing against my ear in a way that shot an unexpected heat whooshing between my legs.

I shouldn’t want to touch him like that. After what Damien did to me, my body reacting this way had thrown me through an intense loop.

He’snotDamien, the little voice in my head reminded me.Don’t let him win.

Feel.

Touch.

Do what makesyoufeel good.

Don’t let that pathetic excuse of man hold power overyourbody!

“Can-can we go?” I asked, suddenly feeling uncomfortable, like there were thousands of eyes surrounding me.

Rhett took my hand in his and bobbed his head, helping me up. Masking the pain was hard but I was able to hide just how bad it was without Rhett noticing.

“I need you to do something for me.”

I turned around and faced Rhett when we made it to the car.

“Wh-what is it?” Rhett asked, his brows pinched with fear. “Are you okay?”

“I…” I started, suddenly feeling embarrassed and like a complete fucking idiot for even considering this. “I need you to make me cum.”

Rhett’s head jerked back in surprise, his lips parting in disbelief. “Samara…”

“Ineedthis, Rhett. I need you to make me feel good so I can drown out the misery. You’re not Damien, and I know you won’t hurt me. I wouldn’t be asking if it wasn’t important.”

He opened his mouth to protest, not getting far before my hand shot out and fisted his shirt, tugging him into a deep, feral kiss.

“Samara.” He broke away from me fast, shaking his head. “No. I can’t.”

I scoffed at him. “Can’t, or won’t?”

“Both,” was his stern reply. “My refusal isn’t because I don’t want to. It’s because I genuinely care about you. Using me to suppress your trauma isn’t going to change what happened, love. In fact, it might even make things worse. It’s too soon, baby. Your body needs time to heal. And speaking of healing, I’m taking you the Vet.”
