Page 56 of Insidious Truths

“What the fuck do you want?” I asked, my eyes narrowed as I walked out and carefully shut the door behind me.

“I…I…”

“Spit it the fuck out already. What the fuck do you want?”

“Is Samara okay?” she finally asked as she got herself together, breathing in deep.

“She’s fine,” I boldly lied. “What’s wrong, Kinsley? Are you scared I’ll kill you now that I know the truth?”

“Oh my god,” was her nervous murmur. She backed away from me, her body shaking. “She told you… Didn’t she?”

Technically, Samara hadn’t told us shit. It was Jace who had the balls to tell Rhett the truth about the little meeting Samara had with Kinsley and her father. I loved watching Kinsley squirm though, so for the hell of it, I played the part.

“She did.”

“I wanted to tell you, Isaac.” She began to cry the longer I unimpressively glared her down. “I-I just didn’t know how. I fell in love with you. I was scared you’d kill me if I—”

She zipped her lips shut and flinched when I raised my hand to her.

“Please don’t hurt me,” she begged like a pathetic bitch, dropping down on her knees like she was worshiping me, her eyes to the floor. “Samara is my partner for the trials. She-she promised to help keep me safe in exchange for information on her father. I didn’t have a choice, Isaac. Please, believe me. I-I don’t want to be sold. I’d rather die than be forced into prostitution.”

“Get the fuck up,” I scoffed, shaking my head at her. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

“You-you promise?” she asked, her wet eyes pleading as she stared up at me.

I sighed, feeling annoyed. “Get up before I change my mind.”

She did just that and shuffled back to her feet, her chest slightly heaving.

“Why are you here?”

“I-I got the news about next week’s trial.”

Ah. Suddenly it all made sense.

“And let me guess… You came here to see if Samara knew all the dirty details.”

She nodded, not bothering to deny it. The girl was smart. I’d give her that much. “Yes.”

“Samara doesn’t know anything. But if you must know, the next trial isn’t a partnership. Everyone is on their own.”

Kinsley’s dark eyes grew painfully wide, her bottom tip trembling.

“I can’t tell you anything more than that. It’s against the rules.”

“Please, Isaac,” she begged as she approached me and grabbed my hands, squeezing them tight. “I know we’re done. I know you’re in love with Samara, and I’ve accepted it. But please, don’t leave me in the dark. I need to know what we’re doing so I can better prepare myself.”

“Sorry.” I pulled away from her and turned back to grab the doorknob, twisting it. “You’re on your own, Kinsley. Good luck.”

I slammed it in her face and locked it as she began sobbing outside the door. Ignoring her, I marched down the hall and into Samara’s bedroom, carefully sliding in bed beside her. Still, my samurai didn’t stir or move a muscle. All I could hear was her breathing in and out deeply as she slept.

I held onto her as tight as I could and then finally began drifting off into a deep, peaceful sleep.

Iawoke Wednesday morning to three hard knocks at the bedroom door. Groaning, I rolled over as the door opened, ignoring Lena’s muffled voice as she began speaking to me. I was so tired and not in the mood for this shit. It was all I could do not to launch from the bed and bash her fucking face in.
