“Well, if he did leave, then he just left me one hell of a mess to clean up with my father. I’d tell you to reach out to the Ravagers and see if Xavier’s heard anything, but with as long as Finn’s phones have been off, I doubt it. If neither one of them turn up over the weekend, then we’ll have to assume they’re together and on the run.”

He fell quiet again, swallowing so hard I heard him gulp through the phone.

“You do realize what this means, right, Kitten? If Finn left…”

“I know.” I forced back the tears trying to fill my eyes and nodded. “We may not see each other again for a while.”

“It won’t be like this forever, baby,” he said with promise, his attempt to make me feel better failing as I frowned deeply and wiped hastily under my eyes. “One way or another, I’ll find some way for us to be together, even if it means having to sneak inside your dorm in the middle of the night.”

“Good luck getting past the guards.”

Jace bellowed out a deep chuckle and gave me a smile that didn’t quite reach his almost hooded eyes. “I’m being serious, Kitten. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you.”

“All I need you to do is stay out of trouble. I know how Damien can be, but with Finn currently MIA, you can’t lose control again, Jace. Whatever Damien asks of you, no matter what it is or how horrible it may be, just do it, okay? I need you to be smart. I need you to stay alive.”

“Even if it means having to physically hurtyou?” he asked. “And maybe even Rhett, Isaac, or Phantom if he commands it?”

“Yes.” I painfully swallowed around the sudden lump in my throat. “Even then.”

Jace sighed, his lips dipping down into a frown that he quickly corrected. “As you wish, baby. And hey, I’m sorry to cut our conversation so short, but I’m exhausted. It’s all I can do to keep my eyes open.”

I let out a sad sigh of my own and glanced briefly to the left, where I’d placed the pages on top of my nightstand. I desperately wanted to tell him the mystery surrounding my father may not be so much of a mystery anymore, but I’d have to supply answers to a fuck-ton of questions I didn’t exactly have yet; at least not until I pilfer through every inch of those pages.

And then there was Phantom’s warning I’d been considering. If what he found really does end up leaving me all torn up with more questions than answers, then it was probably worth keeping it safeguarded a little bit longer. I had to find out the truth for myself and then go from there.

Jace had enough to worry about. I didn’t need him worrying about me unless he had a legitimate reason to.

“That’s fine, babe. I’m not long from laying down anyway.”

“Is there someone there with you?” he asked, moving his face closer to the phone, squinting his eyes.

“No, why?”

“Then what do you keep looking at?”

“My textbooks,” I fibbed coolly. “They’re right next to me on my nightstand. I have this stupid assignment due on Monday and I haven’t bothered starting it. I need to get it done but I really don’t feel like doing it.”

“Oh.” Jace leaned back in his seat with his lips pursed in a tiny pout, guilt washing over him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—”

“Jace.” I stared into his eyes through the screen and offered him a pretty smile. “It’s fine. Go get some sleep. And remember… Be smart, stay alive, and please promise to contact me as soon as you can.”

“I promise,” he agreed. “But I’ll go ahead and warn you now that the next time you do hear from me, it’ll be from a burner. It may be a few days before I have it, but I’ll text you once I do. With everything going on, it may not be safe for me to contact you through this one anymore.”

“Just be careful. If Damien catches you with it…”

“He won’t. I’m gonna go now before I fuck around and fall asleep in the car. I love you, Kitten. I’ll talk to you soon.”

“I love you too, Jace. So damn much.”

I waited for him to hang up first and when he did, I fell back in bed and rubbed tiredly at my eyes, scraping my hands down my face before I forced myself to sit up and zero my sight in on these goddamn pages haunting my sanity.

Fuck it.

I wasn’t really tired anyway.

If I wanted the truth, now was the time to get it. It wasn’t like I had anything else better to do.

I paced around my living room, my anger growing hotter until I eventually saidfuck the worldand hauled up the crumbled pages in my hand and opened the door, slamming it on my way out.
