“No. The baby is Finn’s, but Damien believes the baby belongs to him. Ginger’s last appointment was four days ago, on Wednesday.” He paused again and dragged out another shaky breath. “It’s a long story. All you need to know is your father made a phone call to someone that day. We don’t know who, but he told them the baby was his and there was a change in plans. He told them to call him once the job was done. Ginger thinks—”

“Oh my God,” I muttered breathlessly, my heart pounding harder as I rose to my feet, my chest heaving. “He put a fucking hit on me. Didn’t he?”

That was it. It had to be.

As many times as my father threatened to have me replaced, and now that Ginger was pregnant…with a child he believed was his…another heir….

Fuck.

Ginger was smart. Goddamn that woman was smart.

“Where are you now, Jace?”

“At the club.”

Quickly, I moved over to the computer and tapped the mouse, bringing up the screensaver. After typing in the password, I pulled up the security cameras. So far, there wasn’t any suspicious activity anywhere. Well, at least none that I could see.

“Arm yourself,” he demanded. “We have no idea when it’s going down, but it has to besoon, Jace. Warn Samara. Warn the Ravagers. Whatever you have to do, just fucking do it, okay? I’m working on getting Ginger out of here as fast as I can.”

“How many are there with you?”

“Huh?” he asked like he’d misheard me. “What does that have to do with anything?”

“Just answer the question. How many?”

“There’s nobody here but me, Ginger, and Lena.”

I nodded to that, grinning.

“Why is that important?”

“Because we’re coming for her, Smoke. We’re gonna bring Ginger home, where she belongs.”

He chuckled darkly through the phone. “Only way you can do that is to survive, Jace. Time is running out for you. Like I said, warn Samara and the Ravagers. And let Samara know Ginger will be reaching out to her. Soon. Good luck.”

“Wait! Let me talk to—”

Click.

“—fuckingdamn it!”

I slammed the phone atop the desk and inhaled the deepest breath I could muster, the fury flooding through my veins burning like fresh lava scorching across the landscape. Aside from being bombed with that phone call and learning about Ginger’s unexpected pregnancy, this shit with my father was honestly no surprise to me. If anything, it only fueled my regret of not taking the bastard out when I had the chance.

I didn’t trust this Smoke bloke. I did, however, trust Ginger with my life. She would’ve never trusted Smoke to contact me if this shit wasn’t real, and there were no implications in Smoke’s warning to make me consider his motives were ingenuine. I had to be careful, watch my surroundings, and trust no-fucking-body indebted to my father. I needed weapons. Guns, blades, whatever I could fit on my person and have easy access to in case of an ambush.

But first, I had other matters to attend to.

With Samara busy with the trials, there was only one other person I could call.

The one guy I knew for a fact loved and cared about Samara just as much as I did.

Samara

“Are you doing okay?” Kinsley asked, cringing beside me as we watched Darren, one of the male recruits, inflict a lethal uppercut to Greyson, his best friend and chosen opponent for the trials. This was the fourth match of the night. It was the final round with a little under two minutes left on the clock. All recruits were lined up outside the ring. Males on one side, females on the other. After this fight, it was back to the girls.

Greyson went down, gasping, his cries shielded by the crowd’s ear-ringing screams which hadn’t ceased since the match began about fifteen minutes ago. He barely had time to recover before Darren jumped on top of him. Poor Greyson was already knocked out cold by the time Darren was done bashing his face in.
