It’s incredible that she’s come to mean so much to me in such a short time. It hurts to know I almost screwed it up when I left New York.

Now that I’ve been given a second chance, I’m not going to mess it up.

I finish soaping up my body and then leisurely wash my hair. When I finish, I step out and dry off. Wrapping the towel around my waist, I peek out of the bathroom to see if Liz is still in bed. But the bed is empty. Stamping down my disappointment at not being able to see her naked, I go into my walk-in closet to get dressed for the day.

I’ve never paid much attention to how I dress, but I want to look good for her today. I take out a pair of jeans that a very nice, attractive sales lady told me made my ass look good. I slip them on and then find a fitted button-down shirt. After styling my hair, I head to the living room to find Liz.

“Liz?” I call out.

No answer. She must be showering. I pick up my phone and see a couple of texts.

Mom

Hi Sleepyhead. Just letting you know that Matthew is doing great. Slept all night through. No plans today. He can stay as long as you like.

I text her back quickly.

Thanks for your help, mom. I’ll pick up little guy around 2.

There’s another text. This one is from the private investigator, Peyton.

Peyton

Are you still available to meet at 11am?

I look at the time on my phone and remember I haven’t even told Liz about the meeting. I quickly reply to Peyton.

11 works. We’ll be here.

Peyton

See you then.

Liz walks out of her room a few minutes later. She looks effortlessly beautiful in her simple blue floral sundress and lack of makeup.

“Hey there. I was just about to knock on your door. Peyton is coming over soon. She has an update and would like for us both to be here.”

She smiles at me, but the smile doesn’t reach her eyes. “That’s good. Maybe we can get all of this cleared up soon. I’m looking forward to moving on.”

“Me too. I know this has been hard for you.” I walk over to her and lift my hand to caress her cheek, but she yanks back as though burned. Confusion sets in. She was fine an hour ago. “Is everything okay?”

“Everything is fine. I just think we need to talk.”

She doesn’t look like she is fine. She has something on her mind, and I have a feeling I’m not going to like it.

“Okay,” I agree reluctantly. “What’s going on?”

She sits on the couch, and I follow. I sit next to her, but she scooches over so we aren’t touching each other.

“We need to talk about last night,” she starts. “I had a good time. It was fun. But you know this was a one-time thing.”

“Not that I was counting, but I’m pretty sure we did it multiple times, not once,” I interrupt with a cocky grin. “And I’m not sure why you think last night was the one and only time. I think we should do many repeat performances. Starting tonight, in fact.”

“Ethan, I’m serious.”

“I can see you are.” I move closer and take her hand. “Liz, we have been circling each other for weeks. It was inevitable that last night happened. And why shouldn’t it have? We’re both adults. What’s the harm in what we did?”

She won’t look at me as she responds. “I’m not sorry it happened.”
