She walks past me, heading to her room again. “Okay, well, I hope you have fun tonight, then,” she says quietly.

“Liz?”

She stops walking but doesn’t turn around. I wish I could see her face. “Yeah?”

“If there’s any reason you need me to stay home tonight, I can.”

I hold my breath as I wait for her to answer. I’m making myself vulnerable to her. All it would take is one look, one word. I’m practically begging for her to give me a reason to stay.

She sighs, and I swear I can hear the sadness in the sound. “No, Ethan, there’s no reason for you to stay home tonight. Have a good time.” Without turning around, she opens her bedroom door and disappears inside.

So that’s it. She’s made it clear she wants nothing to do with me.

Whatever. I can get any girl I want. Fuck it. Maybe I’ll pick someone up at the bar tonight.

“What’s with the sour mood tonight?” Dax asks.

I raise my hand up to signal for the server. “Just dealing with some stuff. Nothing a few drinks won’t fix.” Dax looks at me knowingly and purses his lips. “Ah, tired of her and the domestic life already, huh?”

“That’s not it.”

“You sure? I wouldn’t blame you. I bet having her live with you has put a real cramp on your social life. When’s the last time you got laid?” Dax asks, laughing.

“Fuck off.”

“Yep. I see what’s going on. I’m gonna help you out, bro. See that pretty brunette over there at the bar? She’s been eye-fucking you for the last twenty minutes.”

I don’t even glance over. “Not interested.”

“Well, too bad. I’m interested in her blonde friend with the short skirt and tight ass, so I’m going to call them over.” Dax puts on his I’m-gonna-bend-you-over smile and nods in the direction of the bar. The girls smile coyly at him, and the blonde one blows him a kiss.

He calls over our server. “Could you please bring those ladies a couple of shots of tequila? We’ll take a couple as well.” He hands the server a fifty-dollar bill. “This is for you. Put the drinks on my bill.”

I groan inwardly. This is the last thing I need.

“Cut it out, Dax. I’m not in the mood.”

“That’s the problem. You’re not in the mood. And your mopey ass is starting to depress me.”

Ouch. That hits a nerve.

He wants the fun Ethan back? You know what? I do, too. I’m tired of feeling like shit over a woman who wants nothing to do with me.

The server drops off the tequila shots, and I grab one. Dax grins when I tell the server to keep the shots coming. “Fuck it, call the girls over here,” I tell him as I throw back the drink. It burns deep down my throat.

And it feels so damn good.

Dax crooks his finger at the girls, and they slide off the barstools and head our way. They sway their hips sexily as they walk toward us.

The brunette slides into the booth next to me, her lips curving into a playful smile. “You boys look like you can use some company,” she says in a sultry voice aimed at me.

“Oh, we most definitely could use some company,” Dax says. His eyes are on the blonde’s chest as she presses up close to him.

I smile down at the brunette. “We’re two shots in. Hope you girls can catch up.”

She puts her hand on my thigh. “Don’t worry, we’re more than up for the challenge.”

Dax throws his head back and laughs. “I think we’re going to have a great time tonight,” he says to the blonde.
