There are buildings as far as my eyes can see. The cars zooming through the city are so small, as are the little people. I watch it all, completely mesmerized. “Oh my gosh. You’re right. This is amazing.”

“See, I knew you’d like it. One day, you’re going to realize that I’m always right.”

“Ha! You wish.”

I’m surprised at how comfortable I’m feeling already. It’s good to know my fear of heights doesn’t translate to fear of being thousands of feet in the air in a helicopter. “Thank you for taking me up here. I don’t think I’d ever have done this on my own.”

“I’m glad you agreed to come with me. I love watching you enjoy yourself,” he admits.

His softly spoken words bring a shiver to my spine. I slowly pull my hand out from under his. There’s an intimacy in the moment that shouldn’t be there.

Soon, the city skyline is behind us, and we are traveling over smaller buildings and homes. It’s indescribably breathtaking to see everything from this distance. Even though Ethan said he’d been in the helicopter many times, he’s still pressed up against me, looking out the window. I guess it never gets old, no matter how many times he’s been up here.

The flight is coming to an end sooner than I want. Surely it hasn’t been forty-five minutes yet?

Buildings get bigger as the helicopter slowly makes its way down. Once we land, Ethan takes the headphones off my head and hangs both pairs back up.

The pilot opens the door for us and holds out a hand to help me down. “Hope you enjoyed the flight,” he says.

I can’t help the big grin that spreads across my face. “It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done.”

Ethan looks pleased at my words.

As I’m looking around at the small airfield, Ethan makes plans with the pilot for our return trip. Then, he turns to me.

“I have a car waiting for us,” Ethan says. He points to a silver convertible parked near the landing pad.

“You’re driving? You never drive.”

“Well, it’s no fun driving in the city. Now, here in the Hamptons? Much more fun.”

As we get closer to the car, I see why he wants to drive. This isn’t just any car. It’s an Aston Martin. I don’t know much about cars, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t something I could afford, even in my dreams.

It’s so pretty I’m afraid to touch it. I wouldn’t want to leave my fingerprints on the waxed door.

Ethan walks over to my side and opens the door for me. “After you,” he says, a mischievous smile playing on his lips.

“You’re up to something.”

He gets into the driver’s seat, and the engine roars to life. “Don’t know what you’re talking about. We’re just going to dinner.”

As though I’m supposed to believe him when he’s got that mischievous look on his face.

He navigates the car through the parking area and through the smaller streets. Once we reach the highway, he steps on the gas, and we take off. Traffic is pretty heavy, and I’m clutching the door as he weaves through cars. It’s not an asshole type of weave where he’s going to wreck us, but a smooth glide between other cars.

The wind is blowing my hair, and I laugh in pure enjoyment. Ethan is smiling, too. I haven’t felt this carefree in a long time. I think I love convertibles, even if it does a number to my hair.

Pretty soon, I see water off to the side. “Oooh, are we eating at a restaurant beside the water?”

“Kinda like that,” he says cryptically.

A few minutes later, I look up and see a sign indicating we’re entering a marina. Ethan follows the winding road that leads to a parking lot.

After parking, he gets out and opens my door for me, and we start walking toward the marina. I don’t need to ask any more questions. It’s finally obvious that he’s taking me to a restaurant on the harbor.

“I thought tonight was supposed to be casual. How is a helicopter ride and a dinner in the Hamptons at a marina on the water low-key and casual?”

Ethan smiles and shakes his head. “I never said low-key. You did. And dinner on the water is casual.”
