“You could stop at her office.”

“I work this week, the day shift. It’s tough to leave the clinic.”

“How about this? I have to go to her office tomorrow to drop off a bunch of printouts. I could see if she’s up for meeting you at Stillwell Coffee Roasters at ten on Saturday.”

“That’d be awesome. You’d do that for me?”

“Sure. What are friends for?” I say. Then I bite my lip, hard.

Friendsshouldtry to help one another out.

And that’s all I’m doing… right?

Helping.

I’ll come clean to Nick about the whole matchmaker arrangementafterhe hits it off with Hana. They really might make a good couple. She said some things that make sense: how they’re both quiet professionals, both family-minded. Nick obviously wants a family, seeing as he bought a house with this many rooms.

“What—um—what should I wear?” he asks. “Is that a dumb question? It’s probably dumb. But, like, jeans, tee, and sneakers okay?”

“Totally fine. It’s going to be casual.”

“Thanks. Maybe this is another thing I missed out on, thanks to med school. How to fly fish. How to take a woman on a basicdate. Pretty foundational to most guys, but for me, I don’t know. I’m clueless.”

“Don’t worry about it. You’ll do great. So, what should we do for dessert tonight? I’m vetoing the applesauce idea, by the way.”

“You’re in luck. I baked cookies.”

Chapter 10

Maddison

Outlaw looks up at me expectantly.

It’s Saturday morning, and I’ve just uttered his favorite phrase. The glorious “walky-walk.”

He wiggles his bum and his tail shuffles across the floor as I clip him to his leash.

I’ve been up since six, feeling antsy. Today is Nick’s date with Hana. I texted him about it last night.“So, are you ready?”

His answer made my stomach twist into a knot.“I bought a new T-shirt.”

“Just don’t tuck it into your jeans,”I advised him.

“Should I wear contacts?”

“No way. Your glasses are obsidian black. You know what that means.”

“Extreme Handsomeness Alert.”

“Exactly, lol.”

“So, really, glasses?”

“Rock them. That is my official advice.”

“Thanks Maddie.’

I pause by the front door and grab my purse off the hook. It’s stuffed with a folder of flyers that Nick printed out at his work this past week. We’ve been hanging out most nights, and I can’t remember exactly when he gave these to me. I haven’t gotten around to putting them up yet, but that seems like the perfect chore to take care of today.
