“How do I know it wasn’t all planned out?” he asks. “You had a strategy, didn’t you. Woo me with cheesy pickup lines.”

“Me? No way. You’re the one who had the strategy. You set a trap and I fell for it.”

“I distracted you with chitchat.”

“It works when we play checkers, and it works in other ways, too.”

“How about now?” he asks, his eyes heavy on mine. The night is still, but I feel as if the ground is spinning underneath me. “Is it working now? Will you fall for it again?”

“See? You just admitted it. Youdidset a trap.”

“And I got you.”

“You did. What are you going to do with me, now that you have me?”

“This.” He lowers his lips down to mine and gives me the most tender, sweet, gentle kiss I’ve ever experienced in my life.

My stomach drops, way down to my knees.

“That was—that was nice.”

“Nice?” He grins. “Good?”

“Really good. Again.”

“Like that?”

“Like that, but longer.”

He drops his lips down to mine, and this time, when he kisses me, the entire world around us disappears. Houses, gone. Night sky, poof. Gone.

My body against his feels warm, and I can’t tell where I end and where he starts. My bones have turned to honey, my head is all fluff.

“Sweet dreams, Maddison,” he whispers, when we part for air.

I draw in a breath, trying to get my brain to stop being pillow stuffing. “Um, yeah. Sweet.”

He chuckles.

“Sweet dreams, I mean,” I stammer.

“Good night.”

“Night, Nick.”

Am I walking?

I think I’m walking up the stone path, like I’m supposed to. When I get up to the door, I hear Outlaw, behind the panel of oak, let loose a volley of barks.

My hand fumbles as I try to fit the key in the lock.

After a few attempts, I manage to open the door. Once inside, I close it quickly. For the second time since moving in, I lean my back against the door and let out a sigh.

Outlaw takes this as an invitation to pounce.

Both of his front paws knock into my thighs, and if I wasn’t propped up, I’d have toppled over. “Oof. Hey, big guy. I missed you, too.”
