Is there more to what’s happening between us?

Sure.

But I can’t think about that right now.

“And as for my life,” I continue, “whew, yeah, going back sounds heavenly. I mean, nothing’s gone right for me since college. I’ve put one hundred percent effort into my screenwriting career, and I haven’t even sold one movie. I’m going through this stuff with Sylvester, and it’s not easy. Maybelast night I wanted to imagine I was a freshman again. Eighteen. Nick and I had one kiss back then. You know how it is, when you see someone you had feelings for, way back. Old memories come up.”

“Hm…” she says, skeptically.

“Look, I’m sorry.”

My apology is to Hana.

It’s also to me.

I knew kissing Nick last night was wrong, and I did it anyway.

“So, nothing’s really going on between you two?”

“Nope.”

“Please be straight with me. I’ve put in many hours on your copyright issue and I thought we had a deal. I need the truth from you now… so I can figure out whether to bill you or not. I am seriously considering that option.”

Eek.

A bill for the work she’s done for me would be a nasty surprise. I’d probably have to borrow money from my folks to pay it, and that makes my stomach feel queasy.

“I am being straight with you.” I fidget with the water glass again, avoiding her eye. It’s not only her mention of charging me that’s making me anxious. My feelings for Nick are a jumbled mess that I cannot currently sort through.

Not inwardly.

And not here, at this restaurant on Lily Pad Loop, right in front of Hana Chen.

The waitress approaches, her notebook ready in her hand. “Did you ladies decide on what you’d like to order?”

Hana places her request: the Greek salad, dressing on the side, hold the red onions.

I order a Caesar. Once the waitress leaves, I compliment Hana on her choice. “I’m not a huge fan of raw onions, either.”

“Not during lunch.”

“You know, some people think we should all brush our teeth three times a day.”

She fishes in her purse, a frown locked on her lips. “That’s ridiculous. Twice is enough.” She pulls out a manila folder and slaps it down on the table between us.

“I mean, it sort of makes sense, though,” I argue. “We eat three meals, but we only brush twice. Some people think those numbers should match.”

“Well, maybe those individuals need to do something more worthwhile with their time. I’ve never liked pointless musing.”

“Hana—do you like funny movies?”

“They’re not my favorite. I prefer documentaries.”

“Are you a morning person or a night person?”

“I go to bed early and wake up early.”

“How do you feel about ramen?”
