“She was the same with me.” I slump my shoulders a little. “Want to grab a quick drink before the DCI arrives?” He eyes me like I’ve gone mad, “I mean coffee, not the hard stuff, you dick.” He laughs.

“I really want a beer. It’s only been eight hours since she asked me to not drink with her, and it’s all I can think about.”

“You have issues.” I laugh, lighting my mood a little.

Fifteen minutes later, with two coffees in my hand, I’m sitting waiting for Millie to come out of her office when DCI Riverswalks in the door with another officer in tow. I’m about to greet him when the office door opens and Millie steps out. It looks like she has been crying; immediately changing directions I walk over to her and wrap her in my arms..

“What’s happened...are you okay?” I whisper in her ear, when I notice an older man trying to move around us. Stepping back from Millie, I extend my hand.

“Jack Lucas.” He nods, and takes my hand, shaking it firmly

“Joshua Davenport, It’s nice to meet you Mr Lucas, Miss Monroe has told me a lot about you, and all of which I am grateful for.” I can see Millie blush, so I wink at her and she rolls her eyes at me.

“Thank you for coming all this way to see me Mr Davenport, and thank you so much for everything.” She goes to shake his hand, but he pulls her in for a hug, that’s odd.

“Your parents were good friends of mine, and it’s good to see you looking so well. Look after yourself, I’ll be in touch when it’s all complete.” And with that, he walks out and leaves us to it. I wrap my arms around her waist, and pull her closer, kissing her neck.

“Care to tell me what that was all about?” She shakes her head at me.

“Umm…Not yet, I need to process, but it’s good, I promise.” She laughs, wrapping her arms around my neck and placing her soft sweet lips on mine.

“Miss Monroe, Mr Lucas….” I hear the DCI interrupt.

She looks at me, moves back a little to look over my shoulder, “DCI Rivers, I’m sorry I didn’t know you were coming?” She looks a little confused, looking between me and the officers.

“Umm…check your phone, we tried calling a few times,” I tell her with a smirk. Not that I want to, but I step away from her, and gesture for the officers to walk into the office, myself and Millie follow. Millie sits at her desk and I move behind her, leaning against the wall. I’m not sure what they have to say, but I don’t want it to be bad news. I can already feel the nerves coming off of Millie. DCI Rivers takes a seat opposite us, while the other officer stands in the corner.

“DCI Rivers rang a few hours ago saying he has some news on the case.” Millie stands up and comes to stand next to me, and I lace my fingers with hers, feeling her tremble slightly.

“Thank you Mr Lucas, we wanted to let you know that we have found Mr Cadwell.”

Millie looks at me, her eyes wide, like she is looking at me for confirmation of what they just said. Squeezing her hand a little tighter, I nod. I need more information than that, they have told us this before, yet still no arrest.

“Where was he? Do you have him in custody?”

“We don’t have him in custody yet, but the Spanish authorities have arrested him. We have lots of things to deal with before we can get our hands on him, but I wanted to let you know the situation before the papers got hold of it.” His face looks almost a little relieved.

“That’s amazing, I…I can’t believe it, I know it’s not over yet, but…” She is smiling like I have never really seen before. She is beautiful. “Thank you,” she says, her eyes starting to shine with tears.

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted; the pressure I was feeling over it all was almost too much to take. I can’t even imagine how Millie has been handling it all. Hopefully now, we can move on. Yes there is still so much to do but if they have him, then Millie can relax and truly be herself again.

We spend the next half an hour going over what will happen next; all the while Millie holds my hand, gripping like I’m her life support, it’s like she can’t get her head around that it’s over. She is free, from him, from her past, free to be herself without worry, free to be mine.

When DCI Rivers takes his leave, Millie tries to get back to work, but I refuse to let this moment pass by without some sort of celebration.

“Wait, Millie, just take a few minutes, let this sink in, it’s over!”

“I’m not sure I quite believe it yet, I know what he said, it’s amazing, but for so long….he…dominated my life, every waking moment, and even in my dreams he was there turning them to nightmares, it’s hard to think that it’s over just like that!” The emotion in her voice says it all, everything she has been through, everything she has tried to escape from, it is hard to believe. I can’t explain the relief I feel, so I can’t imagine how it is for her. Pulling her up from the chair, my fingers lace with hers, looking her in the eyes and holding her gaze.

“You don’t have to worry now Millie, it’s over, take tonight off? We can do something that’s just for us? What do you say?” She frowns at me; I know she hates letting people down, but then she smiles.

“But there is so much to do with the ball we can’t take the time off.”

“I’m the boss and yes we can. Dan will handle it, we will work this afternoon, then tonight we do what we want, I’ll organise it all…you need to enjoy this moment.”

“Well as you’re my boss in both my jobs… Okay, if it’s just us. I’ll ring Mike, I need to tell him I quit anyway.” My face must say it all, because she smiles and pulls me in for a kiss that sets my world on fire.

“Really, you’re quitting the pub?” I say as I pull away briefly.
