“I don’t know about that,” he chided. “I think we’ll have to check the photo finish.” He laughed, trying to catch his breath. He was taken with how her eyes were sparkling. The beaming smile from ear to ear, and couldn’t help but think how beautiful she looked, the glow around her was breathtaking...

“So, what now, fearless leader? What other tasks do we need to do?” she asked, with a spark of energy he hadn’t seen in a few days.

I hope this means she’s feeling betterhe thought, that whatever was going on with her is nothing serious.

“Now we eat. It’s close to dinner time. Let's go to the diner and treat ourselves.” He suggested.

“Ok, I could use something to eat after that workout.” She nodded and headed for the car.

Watching her walk away, he felt elated, like he was walking on air. When they got to the diner, the conversation flowed so easily. He talked to her about all the things he had been dealing with in regards to the pack; how he never knewthere were so many things that went along with the job, like so much paperwork that he had a hard time keeping up with it.

“Sounds like you need a secretary," she said offhandedly.

“That would be nice, but that was my mom's job so that would mean…” He trailed off.

“That it would have to be your Luna taking over the job,” she finished for him. He cleared his throat, not knowing why the temperature in the diner suddenly got warmer, and he suddenly felt a little embarrassed.

“Well, hopefully, when you find yours, she’ll help relieve some of the work to be done,” she replied with an honest smile.

“What are you thinking of doing for a job?” He asked, trying to change the subject.

“I’m not too sure yet. I was thinking of seeing if I could get on the council. Try to help out the pack, especially the younger ones. You know, make a difference,” she answered, thankfully going with the new line of conversation. “I was actually thinking of starting some kind of program for the kids. Not sure exactly what, but along the lines of allowing them space, time, and guidance on things that they excel in and need help with. And I mean with anything. It could be training, homework, art...stuff,” she laughed.

“Wow, I didn’t know that about you,” he admitted. Wanting to be on the council to help out the next generation made him look at her in a whole new light. The ideas she had were amazing to him.

“Well, I like working with kids, that’s what I was doing when I was away, and I really enjoyed it. I like seeing their little faces light up when they realize they learned something new and that they did it all themselves,” she admitted, “What about you? You like working with the kids?” she asked, taking a drink of her water.

“Yes, I do. I love kids. They are crazy, energetic, and eager to learn.” He watched as the look on her face changed. She tilted her head and smiled as the sparkle in her eyes, the glow around her, came back again.

“Hey, when we're done here, did you want to go back to my place?” he asked. She almost choked on her drink with laughter as he realized, in embarrassment, how that sounded. “No! I meant to sit in the back garden and watch the sunset, not how it sounded. Oh, my, that sounded bad.” He laughed at himself.

“That’s okay.” She wiped tears of laughter as she cleared her throat and continued. “I figured that was what you meant, and I think that would be a great idea. A nice end to a nice day.” She smiled.

As they sat on the bench in his back garden, Spencer put his arm around her and pulled her close. It felt so right having her with him, watching the sun go down together. They both sighed at the same time and chuckled.

When she nuzzled into him, a warm feeling spread all over him.I love this, he thought,I love her. He closed his eyes with the realization that hit him. He was falling in love with her. The thought warmed his heart and made him feel weak in the knees. It explained all the confusing thoughts he had been having. He had ever been in love before, never knew the feeling, never knew it could feel so good, so right.

“Spencer?’ She slowly sat up and looked at him. “There’s something I need to tell you.” She took a deep breath. Spencer looked at her with wonder, as she took her time.

Was she going to go back to where she had been hiding for years? Was she rethinking everything that she had told him. He hated the thought of her going away, the possibility of losing her, not having her close to him, it scared him. He could seean array of emotions cross her face and knew that she had something big she wanted to tell him. He tried to keep his mind clear and not jump to conclusions on what it might be, but he was worried.

“It’s okay,” he said. “You can tell me anything,” he reassured her, taking in a big breath and bracing himself. What she said next hit him like a brick wall.

“I’m pregnant.”

Chapter 9 - Adria

Adria watched as Spencer’s eyes widened in disbelief, and he stared at her. She knew she had to tell him, and she felt this was the best time, she didn’t know why, but she couldn’t keep it in any longer.

She wanted to wait until after things had settled down, but she wasn't sure if that would ever happen. For her, it was now or never. She held her breath as he got up and started slowly walking in a circle in front of her, raking his hands through his hair. She tried to wait patiently for him to respond, wondering what he was thinking. Hoping that he wouldn’t have the same reaction he did when she told him she had feelings for him, but bracing herself just in case, this was a big deal, and she couldn’t fault him if he freaked out a bit.... or a lot

“Are you mad?" she asked quietly, not sure what else to say but needing to break the silence. He spun around and looked at her with bewilderment. Slowly shaking his head, he stopped and looked at her thoughtfully. She could see he was trying to process what she had just said. She didn’t blame him; it was something that took a little time to sink in. She had sat in the doctor's office for a good half hour trying to take in that she was carrying a life inside of her when she was told.

“Mad? No, at all. Shocked? Yes, very much so. I wasn’t expecting this at all. I wasn’t prepared for this. Is this what you were talking about before? When I heard you on the phone?” he asked, sitting back down beside her.

“Yes, it was. I was going to tell you then, but there was so much going on, and I know there still is, but I just couldn’t keep it from you any longer. I know this isn’t the best time for something like this to happen. I definitely didn't plan on it, but it’s happening.” She blurted out in a rush, then held her breath again, as a smile slowly spread across his face.

“Calm down. It’s okay. I know you must be beside yourself, which explains a lot. I just can't believe it; I’m going to be a dad,” he whispered the last part, as she tried to steady herself for his reaction.
