The winnings from my hacked bet still sit in the account I can’t access. Along with the rest of my money. I haven’t mentioned it to anyone, because I’ve been waiting for a callback from the app’s technical department. And I filed a fraudulent charge with my bank, too. But so far, it’s at a standstill.

“He might not have, though,” Camden points out. “He could’ve known that tactic wouldn’t work for you. Or?—”

“Or it was just a right time, right place.”

“How did he get to you?” Greyson asks me.

“I accidentally walked into a meeting he was having in the back room of a club.” I look away. “I don’t know, I was with Beth, and I was drunk. She kind of pointed in the vague direction of the bathroom, and I got lost. Stumbled in after overhearing some stuff… It wasn’t until I saw him again at a game that he realized I had connections.”

“I stuffed that one up,” Knox says. “Said you were my wife right to his face.”

“And then he found out about Joel.”

Willow holds up her hands. “Wait, time out. So, you were engaged to Joel Haverhill, the goalie. Which Abernathy finds out about after he sees you outside the locker rooms of a game?—”

“Basically proving she wasn’t just a random girl who wandered in,” Miles says. “Shit.”

“Yeah, shit,” I echo. “So… what now?”

“Did you find anything out when you followed him?” Miles asks Jacob.

“Wait,” Camden sputters. “You were following Abernathy?”

Jacob smiles. “Yeah. A little recon never hurt anyone, and my dad taught me how to tail someone without them knowing.”

“Police chief dad for the win.” Aspen laughs. “So is the goal to have him arrested? Or…”

“Please don’t say dead,” Steele says under his breath.

“I was going to go withgone,” she replies. “Especially in mixed company.”

Camden raises his hand. “I’m the mixed company.”

“That you are,” Greyson agrees. “Arrested should be the goal.”

Violet eyes her husband. “And we’re not just reporting him immediately because…”

“Because he’s got my life savings tied up,” I say. “And I have a feeling he’s going to hold that over my head for a while.”

“Okay, so, we go along with it. For now.” Knox winces. “I say that with care, because you guys know it’s killing me to be under his thumb. But if he got to me, then there might be someone else he’s bribing. Who could fix games like that?”

“Besides a goalie?” Miles shrugs.

We all stop.

I do anyway. “Joel?”

Knox’s hand on my knee tightens.

“What are you saying, Miles?”

“I’m saying it’s easier for a goalie to make it look like he’s having a good or bad night instead of trying to have one player throw off the whole team.”

My head hurts. And more than that, myhearthurts.

I rise, dusting off my legs. “I’ll be back.”

Knox jumps up, too. “Where are you going?”
