“Absolutely not.”

“I am.” He glares at me. “Don’t argue, sunshine.”

“You’re going to drive me nuts if you don’t have hockey.” I roll my eyes. “The bad guy is gone. I’ll heal. You have to keep playing hockey. Seriously.”

Because I can just picture it now. Him hovering over me, asking a million questions, talking about literally anything and everything with boundless energy…

I mean, there’s a time and place for boundless energy.

My cheeks heat. And, unfortunately, the heart monitor’s beeping speeds up.

He eyes me. “Are you thinking dirty thoughts?”

“What?” I squeak. “Why would you ask that?”

The freaking beeping goes faster.

He stretches out. “You dirty girl. I’ll get you off between rounds tonight.”

Oh, jeez.

But also… not a bad way to spend a hospital stay.

“Easy,” I mutter, helping her out of the car. Her dad and his girlfriend are not far behind me. “You know what? Just?—”

I reach in and loop my arm around her back and my other under her knees. I pick her up before she can protest, avoiding hitting her head on the car, and straighten.

It’s snowing. It’s fucking cold out.

All I want to do is curl up in front of the fireplace with her.

Her dad and Ashley have been staying in her condo. The movers couldn’t take her bed and other larger furniture. Besides her office supplies, the desk and all her books, there wasn’t space for the other stuff.

Which comes in handy.

“I can walk,” Sunny murmurs.

“Yeah, but you don’t have to.” I kiss the top of her head. “Just let me carry you.”

She sighs.

The new doorman opens it for us, and her dad and girlfriend trail us in. They’re sticking around, at least for the time being. Until Aurora is back on her feet—in a literal sense, and also mentally.

She had nightmares in the hospital. I’d wake to her building wail, the thrash of her body against mine. It took every trick in the book to get her to wake up and calm down, to come back to me. To climb out of the darkness she lived through.

But how do I help with that?

Luke Abernathy is, as far as anyone is concerned,on the run. The police have promised to look more into this betting ring, and in the meantime, the whole app has been shut down. The company that owned it abruptly declared bankruptcy. And that took out old Lucas Abernathy Senior, as well.

Aurora’s money that was held hostage was returned to her account.

Another piece of shocking news? The Titans have a new owner.

I guess the whole scandal the Abernathys are facing forced Abernathy Senior to sell. That, and from the media reports, all his money dried up with the company he funded and ran with his son.
