“It’s not like you gave me your heart,” I choke out.

He goes still, his finger at the bottom of the scar. He tips his finger, digging his nail into my skin. Pushing me back with just that slight pressure and the cut of his nail.

“You don’t think so?” he asks.

I blink.

Is he serious?

No, he can’t be. He’s absolutely lying. And I didn’t mean it like that anyway. I meant?—

He knows how you meant it.

“Nicked you,” he adds, running his finger up to where he must’ve accidentally cut me. Or on purpose cut me—who knows. He smears the little droplets of blood that have welled up. “And that’s my physical contribution for the day.”

He steps back, leaving me standing there like an idiot. I pull the pieces of my shirt together and try to gather some of my dignity back.

“And emotional?” I force out when he’s almost at the door.

Maybe I’m still an idiot.

He spins around, still moving backward. “Emotional… hmm… how about this? You fucking devastated me six years ago, Sunny. And now that we’re in the same city, I plan on repaying the favor.”

The door closes behind him, leaving me alone to contemplate what the fuck I’m going to do about him.

And Joel.

I’m seated behind Joel and Aurora because I like to torture myself. I’ve turned over our last interactions all night. And her breasts. Becausefuck, those were perfect. Exactly the right shape and weight, and her nipples were dusky pink. They pebbled when I cut her sports bra. She didn’t flinch away from the box cutter either.

Maybe shedoeslike the shit she writes about. Which Melody only hinted at, and obviously teasing Aurora about it yesterday did the trick to rattle her. I took the book back from Mel and have it sitting on my nightstand, but I haven’t cracked it open yet. Because I’m not a reader, for one. And I don’t think I want to be in Aurora’s head like that.

I was fine without her in my life. In fact, I was happy. But now she’s crash-landed in Denver, and I can’t seem to shake her. She’s living in my fucking building. She’s sleeping with my teammate.

Even breathing the same air irritates me.

So maybe I should just read the book and dive into her fully. Get a clearer picture of her.

Joel is sleeping. Or meditating. He’s got noise-canceling headphones on, and when I last walked past, his eyes were shut.

I know next to nothing about him. Jacob is across the aisle from me, texting with someone. Melody, I’d bet. I switch seats and drop down next to him, elbowing his side to get his attention.

“How’s Mel?”

He eyes me. “Fine…”

“Is she staying home, or…?”

He stows his phone and faces me. “Yeah, she’s working on a painting. What’s wrong?”

It’s daylight, and our goalie is fucking sleeping.

Or meditating.

I jerk my thumb over my shoulder in his direction. “What’s his problem?”
